1 Child & Adolescent Mental Health Service Training Programme For multi-agency children s workforce in Teesside September December 2017 About CAMHS Training The emphasis throughout the training is on effective multi agency working to improve outcomes for children and young people. The sessions are designed to be informative and interactive, participation, group work and discussion will be key learning methods used throughout. The sessions are best suited to those who have a basic knowledge of children s mental health and wish to develop their understanding further. 4 What s included in the sessions. An introduction to Mental Health - Risk and Resilience This half day session acts as in introduction to the subject of children s mental health, understanding what this means and the impact on young people/families and communities. The session introduces the risk and resilience theories and explores how this can be used by agencies to improve outcomes for children/young people and their families. An introduction to CAMHS This half day session introduces the CAMHS locality team structure and explores multi agency responsibilities within this. The session also describes referral criteria, points of access and transformation within CAMHS. An introduction to Positive Behaviour Support This session provides an overview of the development of behavioural difficulties and explores positive and proactive strategies of management using a multi element model of behaviour change. An introduction to Self-harm This session provides an overview of the definitions, demographics and prevalence of self-harm. NICE guidelines are considered and the risk factors associated with self-harm discussed. The session highlights appropriate support services and interventions, including when appropriate to refer to Specialist CAMHS.
5 An introduction to Low Mood/Depression This session provides an overview of low mood and depression in children and young people and the risk factors associated with this. NICE guidelines are considered and appropriate pathways and support strategies discussed. An introduction to ASD This session provides an overview of Autism Spectrum Disorders including prevalence and recognition of difficulties. Discussed is the triad of impairment and also possible differential diagnosis and strategies to support children, young people and their families. An introduction to ADHD This session provides an awareness of ADHD and the core symptoms in children and young people. NICE guidelines are considered and the process of assessment and diagnosis discussed. The session provides an opportunity to discuss support strategies and intervention available within the locality. An introduction to Attachment This session provides an introduction to attachment difficulties in children and young people. The session will explore the impact of attachment on children s development and consider the factors that influence secure and insecure attachment relationships. The session considers the strategies and interventions that support young people with attachment difficulties. An introduction to Anxiety This session will provide an overview of anxiety and panic difficulties in children and young people. The session will explore risk factor associated with anxiety difficulties and discuss appropriate support mechanisms and strategies to help young people experiencing anxiety / panic difficulties.
6 An introduction to Sensory Processing Difficulties We are all sensory beings with our own profile of preference and dislikes that influence how we engage with our world. As fully integrated adults, we are able to adapt and tolerate a level of mismatch between our own sensory processing abilities and the demands placed upon us from external sensory stimuli. This practical workshop aims to explain the concepts and processes of sensory processing, using our own experiences. Adaptive strategies and top tips for function will be shared in order to empower young people with sensory processing difficulties. An introduction to Leaning Cognitive Development NEW! This session provides an introduction to cognitive development and the impact on a child s learning. The session will explore risks to development with consideration to Special Educational Needs including strategies to strengthen and enhance academic success. The session will highlight the difficulties faced by these young people and is aimed at the Children s workforce audience who have basic knowledge of cognitive difficulties and wish to learn more. An introduction to Eating Disorders NEW! This course is intended to provide an introduction and overview of eating disorders related to children and young people and will cover areas including definition, signs and symptoms, key facts, risk factors, and support strategies. This course is intended for a children s workforce audience who have little or no knowledge of eating disorders and wish to learn more about the illness. We do not recommend the course to individuals currently affected by an eating disorder.
