Accumulation of Physical activity in primary school children: The Healthy Lifestyles Programme (HeLP) Dr. Lisa Price, Dr. Jenny Lloyd, Dr. Katrina Wyatt, Dr. Melvyn Hillsdon
Background All children and young people should engage in moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity for at least 60 minutes and up to several hours every day. DoH 2011
How is it accumulated Multiple short burst Continuous bouts Aim 1 : Examine accumulation of physical activity in bout lengths for males and females
How do we assess meeting the guidelines Average time Each day Van Sluijs et al., 2008 Esliger & Hall, 2008 Aim 2 : Examine % of children meeting DoH guidelines using two different methods of assessment
Method 887 children randomised to receive GENEActiv 8 days (1 familiarisation day) Collected at 85.7 Hz Processed using GGIR package in R (van Hees et al.,) 4 days (inc 1 weekend day) 10 hours of valid wear Cuts from Phillips et al., 2013 Analysed in Stata 14.0
Outcome variables ENMO (mg) - x 2 + y 2 + z 2-1 Time in PA intensities Total time in activity MVPA Bursts 1 second epochs Bouts 1min, 5 mins, 10 mins Meeting activity guidelines Daily / average
Compliance 887 randomised to receive GENEActiv 852 files available to analyse 830 met the inclusion criteria 10 hours on 4 days Criteria 10 hours on: Compliance 4 days % 5 days % 6 days % 7 days %
Results Time (mins) spent in activity intensities (n=830) Mean (SD) Median (IQR) ENMO (mg) 49.3 (11.1) 47.8 (14.2) Total PA ( light) (mins) (35.7) (48.9) Light PA (mins) (24.4) (32.1) Mod PA (mins) 40.2 (11.7) 39.0 (15.5) Vig PA (mins) 13.4 (6.17) 12.1 (7.7) MVPA (mins) 53.6 (16.5) 51.4 (21.8)
Time (minutes) Time (minutes) Median time spent in total activity by bout length (n=830) second 1 minute 5 minutes 10 minutes Bout length Median time spent in MVPA by bout length (n=830) second 1 minute 5 minutes 10 minutes Bout length
Time (mins) Median time spent in total activity by bout length by gender ** Males 200 Females ** ** ** 0 1 second 1 minute 5 minute 10 minute Bout length
Median time (minutes) spent in MVPA activity by bout length by gender N Median IQR Z p 1 second Males Females < minute Males Females < minute Males Females <0.001
Meeting DoH guidelines Inclusion criteria: participants with 7 days of data (10hours) Total Males Females n % n % n % Average 60 mins mins on each day
Conclusions High compliance with wear time criteria Better estimation of children s habitual PA Most PA accumulated in < 1 minute bouts Boys have higher total and bouted PA Previous estimate of % meeting guidelines may have over estimated
Where next? Consensus on interpretation of DoH guidelines? Do accumulation patterns change across different groups of children? Overweight SES Do accumulation patterns have different relationships to health outcomes? What patterns are most beneficial?
