6 Territory Matters 2018 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Bruce s future treatment after finding melanoma tumours on his brain. 1. Why did they scan your brain? The brain MRI scan on Wednesday 4th July was part of my normal quarterly checkup. They did a MRI scan because the normal PET scan doesn t show up brain tumours. I had a PET scan booked in for 30 July in Sydney. 2. What did they find? The MRI scan showed 3 lesions or tumours on my brain. One about 13 mm at the front left on the surface of the brain. One about 6mm at the back right on the surface. A final tumour, the size of a small pea, right in the centre of my brain quite deep. Before surgery they found one more very small tumour on the mid-right hand side. 3. What happened next? I was admitted to hospital on Thursday 5th July for steroid medication and to consult with specialists. I had no other symptoms (physical, speech or memory). I looked, sounded and acted completely normal. We met with Johnny the brain surgeon and Lizzie the radiation oncologist. I also had a CT body scan to check if there was any sign of melanoma in my body (there wasn t). This means my normal medication has been working. Unfortunately though the drugs can t travel to the brain. It was decided that I would have brain surgery as soon as possible to remove the largest tumour at the front of my brain. I was discharged from hospital on 7th July. 4. Brain Surgery - where are you being treated? Right here in Darwin. Royal Darwin Hospital is one of two places in Australia with world leading stereotactic brain surgery S8 STEALTH equipment. On Wednesday 11th July, only one week after discovering the tumours, I had brain surgery to remove the largest front tumour. After 48 hours in ICU I was discharged from hospital on Friday 13th July with nothing but a scar. There are no other effects from the surgery - no pain, no headaches, nothing physical or speech or memory related. 5. What s next - Radiotherapy? The next part of treatment will be travelling to Adelaide for stereotactic (SRS) radiotherapy. cfm?pg=stereotactic This non-invasive surgery shoots multiple beams of high concentration x-rays from different angles at a precise location. The radiation kills the cancer cells whilst protecting the healthy brain cells nearby. This treatment for me will be just one session of about 1 hour. I will travel to Adelaide around the 6th August. There is about 1 week required for preparation. After treatment I will only need 1 recovery day in Adelaide before returning to Darwin. 6. What side effects does the radiotherapy cause? The only normal side effects are tiredness and possibly headaches caused by some slight swelling of the brain. 7. What stops melanoma returning - Immunotherapy? A decision will need to be made after radiotherapy. It seems that the best solution will be to have a course of immunotherapy (Nivolumab in combination with Ipilimumab). However, this is a very new treatment option and the results are not certain. melanoma-immunotherapy-brain-metastases-treatmentrisk/article/666478/ After immunotherapy the plan would be to return to the targeted treatment (tablets) I have been taking since January Are you still working full-time? Yes. Although there will need to be periods of travel for treatment and then rest and recovery time. St Peter s Nightcliff and the NT Diocese are very good in caring for me and our family. I will not know until after treatment what I can and can t do. I will still have have regular medical appointments and tests which take time. 9. Does it cost a lot? I m treated as part of the public health system so most of my drugs and doctor appointments are free through Medicare here in the NT. 10. How are Jodi and the children coping? Good question hard to answer. In some ways it s harder for them living with the uncertainty. We have been very open about talking about my condition and treatment as a family. In 2017 we put some plans in place to be ready if the melanoma spread. There are financial plans with NT Diocese, St Peter s Nightcliff, and BCA including housing. There are also plans for communication. A number of friends have taken on key roles to help us. Laura, Felicity and Oliver have joined the cancer support network CanTeen. We have had great support and practical care from our St Peter s family, NT Diocese family and BCA family. 11. What can we pray for? My prayer from the start is that I might learn contentment. This hasn t been a time of doubt for me. I m more convinced than ever of God s goodness and grace and thankful for what God does and is doing in my life each day. Pray for... Jodi and the children to also trust in God s goodness and to not fear an uncertain future. Give thanks for... our medical system here in Australia the wonderful medical staff and specialists that provide my ongoing treatment and care - particularly those at the Alan Walker Cancer Centre here in Darwin. opportunities to speak of God s love with medical staff, other cancer patients, family, and our church family.
