Update of activities in promoting the European Code of Cancer in the fields of nutrition and physical activity Dr Wendy Yared, Director Association of European Cancer Leagues (ECL) Joint Meeting of the High Level Group and the EU Platform 26 October 2018, Luxembourg

About ECL Pan-European umbrella organisation created in 1980 based in Brussels, Belgium Members are cancer charities at mainly national level across wider Europe, trusted as reliable sources of information and support by millions of citizens ECL member leagues have over 6,000 staff members and more than half a million volunteers in their fight against cancer. ECL serves as a platform of exchange of best practices, where members learn from each others' experiences.

Cancer in Europe Cancer is the second leading cause of mortality in EU Member States after cardiovascular diseases There were more than 1.4 million deaths in 2018 for the EU 28* Cancer accounted for a somewhat higher share (29.7 %) of deaths among men than among women (23.2 %). Almost half of all deaths are due to cancer of the lung, colon, female breast, pancreas and prostate. In both men and women, colorectal cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death * Source:

EUROPEAN CODE AGAINST CANCER Initiative of the European Commission First edition of the Code was published in 1987, with the first Europe against Cancer programme Informs people about actions they can take for themselves or their families to reduce their risk of cancer The more recommendations people follow, the lower their risk of cancer will be. Almost half of all deaths due to cancer in Europe could be avoided if everyone followed the recommendations.

Denmark National Actions on promoting the European Code Against Cancer supported by ECL 'Full of Life campaign (Alcohol) The Danish Cancer Society and TrygFonden launched the five-year 'Full of Life' campaign aimed at Danish youth. The campaign will help to push the alcohol ban forward, reduce alcohol intake and create a healthier alcohol culture among young people in Denmark. The 'Full of Life' campaign has developed the parenting 'Your Children - Your Alcohol' parenting, with short movie about youth and alcohol, with material for parenting:

National Actions on promoting the European Code Against Cancer supported by ECL Bosnia and Herzegovina (by ECL Youth Ambassadors) Healthsphere 4 pillars: House of Prevention; House of Healthy Food; House of Mental Health smile ; House of Physical Activity Each Healthsphere visitor received a "12 minutes movement against cancer" sticker, ECAC leaflet and a survey at the info desk. Visitors to go through all 4 houses from the start line, and picked up all 4 types of stickers (one from each house) and fill out the survey at the finish line. 15 Recent Actions at European Level Whole-Grains Forum 27 June 2018 Brussels Partnering on Whole Grain for Health and Well-Being why consumers should choose whole grain first Organised with Healthgrain Forum Objectives: Spreading the whole grain narrative on health and well-being at EU policy level. Launching a conversation on whole grain between different sectors to create an EU whole grain movement. Creating a community of whole grain advocates by securing firm interest on the desire to work together to stimulate greater consumption of whole grain in Europe.

Recent Actions at European Level MEPs Against Cancer Roundtable 17 October 2018, European Parliament Hosted by Irish MEP Nessa Childers Overweight and obesity are a major risk factor for cancer, having been accounted responsible for an estimated of half a million new cancer cases globally in 2012, with the attributable percentage of new cases strikingly higher in the WHO European Region. According to a Cancer Research UK report published in September 2018, overweight and obesity could overtake smoking as the single biggest cause of cancer in UK in a quarter of a century, if current trends continue as projected. The 4th edition of the European Code Against Cancer (ECAC) clearly recommends the public to take action to be a healthy body weight and to have a healthy diet which includes eating plenty of wholegrains, pulses, fruits & vegetables. An analysis by the World Cancer Research Fund on the dose-response relationship between wholegrain consumption and the risk of colorectal cancer indicated a 17% decreased risk per 90g intake of wholegrains consumed per day. Further actions need to be taken to implement cancer prevention recommendations through mechanisms available at the EU level.

Communication: European Code Against Cancer Available in all official EU languages (+ others!)
