1 Awareness Week on Alcohol- Related Harm (AWARH 13) May 2013, Brussels Impact and Results
2 Overview & objectives Leverage the momentum created by the EAHF on 25 April 2013 and the Month of the Brain (May 2013) to raise awareness of the need to tackle alcohol-related harm Prompt policy makers to develop and implement effective and continued policies: Renew and strengthen the EU Alcohol Strategy, based on an integrated approach to alcohol related harm which addresses all key components involved, from prevention to diagnosis, treatment and support to patients Implement targeted measures under the EU Reflection Process on Chronic Diseases to address alcohol-related harm Empower and encourage national governments to capitalise on EU supporting policies in order to further strengthen national policies and strategies aimed to tackle alcohol-related harm
3 Health Attaché Working Breakfast (14 May 2013) National action to solve a European problem: addressing alcohol related harm Hosted by the Permanent Representation of Estonia to the EU Attended by 14 Health Attachés representing national governments from 13 member states and Croatia Presentation of Consensus Paper by Achim Kautz (ELPA) Focus on national actions and the value of EU supporting policies Key outcomes of the meeting: All EU member state representatives stressed their national government s position that the EU Alcohol Strategy should be renewed by the European Commission and be part of an integrated approach to alcohol policy, from prevention to treatment. Action to tackle alcohol-related harm should be integrated into all policy areas, such as pricing and taxation, advertising, education and trade A toolkit of best practice would be useful for member states in order to implement an integrated approach to addressing alcoholrelated harm. The Commission could take this initiative on board Next steps Publication of the Alcohol Strategy evaluation in June 2013 Discussions with the Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy Tonio Borg on continuation of best action to tackle alcoholrelated harm planned in May 2013 Launch of the Joint Action on Alcohol in May 2013, work to start in January 2014
