2 What is a Pap test? A Pap is a test that looks for changes to the cells on your cervix (the entrance to the womb). A small sample of cells can also be taken from the vagina in women who have had a hysterectomy (surgery to remove a woman s uterus or womb). A Pap test is important to prevent (stop) cervical cancer. This picture shows the cervix at the top of the vagina. 2
3 Why do I need this Pap test? Your oncologist (cancer doctor) ordered this Pap test because your previous Pap test results showed pre-cancerous changes to the cells. This is also called an abnormal test result. The test remains a screening test that would be done if you have a history of cervical cancer or a previous abnormal Pap test result. What do the results mean? A Pap test result may be normal or abnormal. A normal result means that no cancer cells were found. An abnormal Pap test result that shows pre-cancerous cells means there are changes in the cells of your cervix. This does not mean that you have cancer. How do I prepare for the Pap test? You do not need to do anything to prepare for this blood test. 3
4 How is the Pap test done? We will ask you to lie down on your back. The doctor puts a speculum (see picture below) into your vagina to see your cervix. When your doctor is able to see your cervix then the pap test can be taken using a brush. If you had a hysterectomy and do not have a cervix, the pap will be taken from the vagina. Is the Pap test painful? You may feel some discomfort or pressure, but it is usually is not painful. You may have a small amount of bleeding after a Pap test. 4
5 What happens after my pap test? Your pap test will be sent for testing to the lab. The results will be available to your doctor in 3 to 4 weeks. Here are the types of results you may see on the Pap test and what they mean: ASCUS stands for Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance. These are mild changes to the cells. LSIL stands for Low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion. These are moderate changes to the cells HSIL stands for High-grade intraepithelial lesion. These are serious changes to the cells. AGUS stands for Atypical glandular cells of undetermined significance. This means there are changes to the glandular cells (cells inside the cervix) that are not normal. If the Pap test done in our Gynecology Oncology clinic show abnormal test results again, your oncologist may ask you to come back for more tests or treatment. The tests and follow-up treatment you have will depend on how serious your test results are. Some test results that are abnormal don t need treatment because these abnormal cells can sometimes clear on their own. Some abnormal test results can be mild and related to treatment for a virus called HPV (Human papilloma virus). In some cases, your doctor may ask you to have another Pap test in 3 to 6 months to make sure the abnormal cells are still there or not. 5
6 What if the abnormal cells do not go away on their own? Your doctor may ask you to do more tests or treatments. How do I get my Pap test results? There are 2 ways you can receive your results. Your results can be given to you at your next appointment with the doctor. You can see your results online by signing up for your MyPORTAL.com.
