Lesson 1 Upper Key Stage 2/P5 P7 Curriculum links PSHE/Health and Wellbeing/PSE/PSDU The big picture This lesson will help pupils understand: the basic facts about cancer common fears and misconceptions around cancer. For this lesson you ll need activity sheets 1a What is cancer? The facts and 1b Have you got the facts about cancer? scissors glue sticks. Breaking the ice Start the lesson by setting the ground rules for class discussions. Then introduce the topic. Explain to your class that cancer is a disease that s been around for millions of years and continues to affect a lot of people. In the past, people have often been scared to talk about cancer. But not talking about something often makes it seem scarier and more confusing. Talking points Discuss with your pupils about what they know, or think they know, about cancer and any questions they have. It s a good thing to include any misconceptions at this stage you can then refer back to these and correct them in the plenary. Get the class to read through activity sheet 1a, What is cancer? The facts. This is a great way to help you explain what cancer is and how it can be treated. Go through the Did you know? list on the activity sheet to help dispel common myths about cancer.
Class activity To reinforce their learning, hand out activity sheet 1b, Have you got the facts about cancer? In small groups or pairs, ask pupils to cut out the characters, speech bubbles and cancer facts. They should match the speech bubbles to the characters they think are saying those words. Then match the cancer fact they think will most help each of the characters to feel less worried. The correct combinations are: Mr Davies Why me? What have I done wrong? Cancer fact D Rachel I m scared Dad s going to die. Cancer fact C Mike People with cancer always lose their hair. Cancer fact B Ben Can I catch Grandad s cancer? Cancer fact A Checking understanding To finish the session ask pupils to recall some key facts they ve learnt about cancer. For example, what are the three main treatments and their common side effects? Make sure pupils are clear on the Did you know key facts. This is a good time to refer back to pupils initial ideas about cancer to correct any remaining misconceptions or answer questions they may have. Let your pupils know where they can go to with concerns or questions about any issues raised in the lesson. Remember, the Macmillan Support Line is here for anyone who has questions about cancer or just wants someone to talk to. It s free to call on (Monday Friday, 9am 8pm). To take the lesson further, ask pupils to discuss what emotions each of the four characters might be feeling while Mr Davies is going through treatment for his cancer. Explain that people often feel conflicting emotions in stressful times. Why not request a Macmillan talk? Macmillan speakers can talk to your group about all the ways we help people affected by cancer and give hands-on support with fundraising or awareness events. Simply send details of your request to schools@macmillan.org.uk I learned lots from the lady from Macmillan. It was good to learn about helping people with cancer. She was fun and I hope she comes back again Primary school pupil
Activity sheet 1 Upper Key stage 2 / P5-P7 What is cancer? Our bodies are made up of millions of building blocks called cells. You cannot see them except with a microscope. Cancer is an illness that affects these cells and stops our bodies working properly. Cells affected by cancer are called cancer cells. Sometimes these cancer cells form a lump which is often called a tumour. Normal cells Cancer cells forming a tumour Meet Mr Davies Mr Davies is a school caretaker. He has worked at the same school for over 10 years and is very popular. Recently, Mr Davies hasn t been able to come into school because he is being treated for cancer. His cancer cannot spread to the people around him (people can t catch cancer from someone else), but it could spread to another part of his body and stop that part working properly. To stop the cancer spreading, Mr Davies needs to go to hospital for treatment. Mr Davies can be treated for cancer The doctors could treat Mr Davies cancer in three main ways: Surgery The cancer cells may have formed a lump called a tumour. This is cut out during an operation. Radiotherapy The cancer cells are destroyed by high energy rays. This doesn t hurt and is like having an X-ray taken. Chemotherapy Very strong drugs are used to kill the cancer cells. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy have some side effects. People who have these treatments can feel sick and tired, and their hair can fall out. These side effects will not last long and hair nearly always grows back. The earlier someone gets treatment for their cancer, the better. Did you know? You cannot catch cancer from someone else. Lots of people get better from cancer and live a normal life. It is very rare for children to get cancer. Cancer is not a punishment for doing something wrong. No one knows exactly why some people get cancer and other people don t. Sometimes the treatments cannot make the cancer go away and sadly some people die from the illness. and the Isle of Man (604). MAC13582_KS2_ACT_1.
Activity sheet 1b Upper Key Stage 2 / P5-P7 Mr Davies lives with his daughter, Rachel, and his two grandchildren, Ben and Natasha. Ben is nine and Natasha is four, and they both go to the school where Mr Davies works. You can help Mr Davies, his family and friends to understand more about cancer. Cut out all the pictures and speech bubbles. Match the speech bubbles to the people you think are saying the words. Now give each of them the fact about cancer you think would help them to feel less worried. Mike is a good friend of Mr Davies Mr Davies is a school caretaker. He has cancer. Rachel is Mr Davies daughter and Ben s mum Ben is Mr Davies nine-year-old grandson and the Isle of Man (604). MAC13582_KS2_ACT_1b.
Activity sheet 1b Upper Key Stage 2 / P5-P7 You can help Mr Davies, his family and friends to understand more about cancer. Cut out all the pictures and speech bubbles. Match the speech bubbles to the people you think are saying the words. Now give each of them the fact about cancer you think would help them to feel less worried. Cancer fact A Mr Davies cancer can t spread to the people around him. Cancer fact B If Mr Davies has chemotherapy, he could lose his hair. It always grows back though, sometimes a different texture or shade. Cancer fact C Many people overcome cancer and continue to live normal lives. Cancer fact D Anyone can get cancer. It s not a punishment for doing something wrong. The person who gets it s not to blame. and the Isle of Man (604). MAC13582_KS2_ACT_1b.
