This first half of this presentation contains information on colorectal cancer, including national and state statistics, risk factors, diagnosis and treatment options. The second half of this presentation contains information on all cancer-related outreach and support efforts conducted by Memorial Health System and our local partnering organizations in 2015.

Incidence Rates
Risk Factors Poor Diet Diet high in red meats and processed meats, and lacking in fruits, vegetables and whole grains Lack of Physical Activity Obesity Smoking Heavy Alcohol Use Age People age 50+ Personal or Family History of Colorectal Cancer, Polyps or Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Cajun Heritage and Colorectal Cancer Research has shown that Cajun Americans have a disproportionately high rate of colorectal cancer. Further study is needed to rule out environmental factors and determine if the higher colorectal cancer rates in the Cajun population is a genetic susceptibility. 10 Signs and Symptoms of Colorectal Cancer There are often no symptoms of colorectal cancer until it becomes a very advanced stage, which is why screenings are important. When symptoms do occur, they include: A change in bowel habits that lasts more than a few days The feeling of needing to have a bowel movement that doesn t go away even after doing so Rectal bleeding or blood in the stool Abdominal pain or cramping Fatigue Unintentional weight loss
Diagnosis of Colorectal Cancer As with all cancers, an early diagnosis can help play a major role in colorectal cancer survival. The best way to ensure an early diagnosis, or even prevent colorectal cancer, is to have regular colorectal cancer screenings. During a colonoscopy, polyps can often be found and removed before they have an opportunity to become cancerous. If cancer is detected, the stage of the cancer is determined.
Colorectal Cancer Staging Colorectal cancer staging is determined by how far the cancer has grown into the wall of the intestine, if it s spread to other nearby areas and if it s spread to the lymph nodes. The stage of cancer determines prognosis and the next course of treatment. For more information on colorectal cancer staging, visit: detailedguide/colorectal-cancer-staged
Colorectal Cancer Screening Various forms of colorectal cancer screenings are available. Consult your physician for more information on each type of testing to find out which is best for you. Fecal Occult Blood Testing Offered at Memorial each spring, free of charge and open to the public Stool DNA Test Sigmoidoscopy Colonoscopy Double Contrast Barium Enema CT Colonography (Virtual Colonoscopy) Most patients begin colorectal cancer screenings at age 50, and are recommended to have a new screening done every 10 years. Patients with high risk factors for developing colorectal cancer will often be advised to receive screenings earlier than age 50 and more often than every 10 years. If you have risk factors, such as a family history of colorectal cancer, consult your physician about the best screening schedule for you.
Colorectal Cancer Treatment Surgery Chemotherapy Targeted Therapy Radiation Therapy
Surgical Treatment of Colorectal Cancer Most often the main treatment for early stage colorectal cancer. Polypectomy and Local Excision Done with colonoscope during colonoscopy Colectomy Surgery to remove all or part of the colon and nearby lymph nodes Diverting Colostomy For patients with tumors blocking the colon and not allowing anything to move through, causing a great deal of nausea, vomiting and pain in the patient. Surgery is done to divert the part of the colon containing the tumor, and a stoma is placed so that the patient can begin cancer treatments without the severe blockage symptoms.
Chemotherapy Colorectal Cancer Treatment Chemotherapy Drugs that work by attacking fast-growing cells, such as cancer cells. Systemic Chemotherapy Drugs are injected into a vein or taken by mouth and pass through the bloodstream, reaching all areas of the body. Regional Chemotherapy Drugs are injected directly into an artery leading to the part of the body containing the tumor. Side effects are reduced because the drugs don t reach all areas of the body. This treatment is used less often than systemic chemo. Adjuvant Chemotherapy Chemo given after surgery, once all visible cancer has been removed. Can help prevent cancer from returning by killing smaller cells that may have remained after surgery. Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy Chemo given before surgery to shrink tumor and make surgery easier.
Targeted Therapy Colorectal Targeted Therapy Cancer Treatment Drugs that attack specific parts of cancer cells. Can be used instead of, or in addition to, chemotherapy. Different, but typically less severe side effects than chemotherapy. Given intravenously.
Radiation Therapy Colorectal Cancer Treatment High energy beams of radiation are specifically targeted to kill cancer cells. Often combined with chemotherapy to more effectively treat colon and rectal cancers. External Beam Radiation Therapy Radiation focused on cancer from a machine outside the body. Endocavitary Radiation Therapy Used for some rectal cancers, an instrument is placed into the rectum, where it delivers high-intensity radiation. Brachytherapy Small pellets of radioactive material are put into a tube that was inserted into, or next to, the cancer. The radiation from the pellets only travels a short distance, which limits the effects on the other areas of the body.
