1 Volume 1, Issue 1 November December 2017 Greetings from the AVMC Newsletter Desk We are delighted to bring out the maiden issue of AVMC - Newsletter. All suggestions to improve AVMC - Newsletter are welcome. Thought for the month The True Sign of Intelligence is not Knowledge, but Imagination. Workshop on MENTORSHIP in Medical Education Medical Education Unit (MEU), AVMC, organized a 2 days workshop on 13 th and 14 th December Dean Dr. R. Maharaja was the Chief Guest for the function and gave Inaugural Speech. He emphasized the indispensability of Medical Education Programmes in the development of faculty in a medical college. He appraised the paradigm shift in the medical education trending towards a scientific approach in curricular development, teaching learning activity and assessment all over the country. Dr. G. Shrikanthan, former coordinator, MEU, AVMC, Dr B R Asokan, MEU, AVMC,Coordinator, Dr. D. Amudharaj, Dr. Sasmita Mishra, Dr. S.Ilankathir, Dr.Hemalatha, Dr. Umadevi. KP, Dr. J. Govardhan and Dr.Latha discussed various topics ranging from Ideal Mentor, Ideal mentee, Maxims of Mentor-Mentee interactions and Maxims of good feedback. The highlights of the workshop were pretest, posttest and roleplay by the participants with different scenarios.

AVMC Newsletter A Workshop & Hands-on Training on Preparation of Luminal Cast by Plastination Technique For Museum Maintaining Departments of Various Institutes in Medical Sciences was organised by the Department of Anatomy on Dr. P. Chellapillai, Medical Superintendent, Dr. H. Palaniswamy, Vice Principal and Dr. K.R. Srinivasan, Emeritus Professor, Department of Anatomy were the members on the Dias. The first session of the workshop started with lecture by Dr. T. Rajan, HOD, Department of Anatomy. In the afternoon session, there was Hands-on Training of Luminal Plastination at the Dissection Hall. Under the instructions & guidance of Dr. T. Rajan, the delegates were able to practice the technique of Luminal Plastination.

AVMC Newsletter SURGICAL SKILLS A CASE OF AN EXTREMELY RARE PRESENTATION OF CARCINOMA BREAST WITHOUT LUMP was opearted by the Department of Surgery. 45 years old female patient presented to OPD with complaints of burning sensation in the right side axilla for 6 months. No h/o of any lump in breast/nipple discharge. On local examination of right breast a dimpling in lower outer quadrant of breast was identified with no palpable lump. Another dimpling was seen over right axilla beneath which there was a 1.5 x 1.5 cm hard fixed solitary lymph node in right axilla. Left breast and axilla were normal. No other swellings were appreciated over the neck, abdomen or elsewhere in the body. Mammogram showed a well defined hypoechoic microcalcification lesion measuring 0.8x0.7 cm below right nipple suggestive of a possible mass with axillary lymphadenopathy. FNAC of lymph node revealed adenocarcinoma with metastasis in right axillary lymph node. Bronchoscopy, upper GI endoscopy and CT thorax & abdomen were done to rule out other causes for occult primary in axillary lymph nodes. Complete bone scan was done which was negative for metastasis. USG abdomen was normal. Patient was staged as III B (T4b N2 M0). Two cycles of neoadjuvant chemotherapy were given following which there was decrease in the size of the lymph node and it became mobile. Patient was taken up for Modified Radical Mastectomy. Histopathology report showed Invasive Ductal Carcinoma breast of right side with metastatic deposits in lymph nodes [stage III A(AJCC)]. ER, PR status came positive, HER2 was negative. Post operatively patient was continued with 4 cycles of adjuvant chemotherapy. Patient is now on tamoxifen and regular follow up is being done. Preoperative picture showing dimpling of skin over Rt. 4 4. AVMC Newsletter CMEs conducted in November and December 2017 An awareness programme was conducted by the Departments of General Medicine and Obstetrics & Gynaecology. Medical superintendent Dr. Chellapillai spoke on the various aspects of Diabetes. Prof. Dr.S. Vithiavathi, HOD, Dept. of Gen.Medicine briefed on the preventive aspects of DM and importance of screening for complication. Gestational Diabetes Mellitus was elaborated in detail by Prof. Dr. K. Vijaya, HOD, O&G. Prof Dr. Kanchana, HOD, Department of Surgery & Deputy Medical Superintendent highlighted the importance of foot care in diabetes. Prof. N. Ramya stressed on the early detection of individuals in DM and informed the public about all the facilities that are available free in Medicine OPD of Aarupadai Veedu Medical College & Hospital. Faculties from various Departments and the general public actively participated. This was followed by screening for DM of interested people from the public and staff members. Educational pamphlets in Tamil were distributed to all the participants.

AVMC Newsletter The Department of Biochemistry organized CME on the topic Metabolic syndrome on The CME was awarded 1 credit hours by The Tamil Nadu Medical Council The first three toppers in Biochemistry in the University Examination-August 2017 were awarded prizes. Dr. Durga Prasad Rath MS, M.Ch from Department of Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery, JIPMER talked about Obesity, Metabolic syndrome and Cardiovascular disease. Guest speaker Dr.Jaya Prakash Sahoo MD, DM from Department of Endocrinology, JIPMER gave a lecture on Metabolic syndrome Diagnosis and treatment.
6 6. AVMC Newsletter Department of General Surgery conducted CARCINOMA BREAST (Yesterday, Today and tomorrow) on Dr. B. Kanchana, H.O.D. Department of General Surgery gave the welcome address to the gathering and spoke about the Carcinoma Breast (yesterday, today and tomorrow). Dr. N. Parthiban, M.S., DNB., gave the introduction about the guest speaker. Dr. Chellapillai. M.D., DMRT., Medical Superintendent gave away presidential address and honoured the guest speaker. Dr. R. Chandrasekar. M.S., honored the guest speaker with a shawl and bouquet Dr. R. Karthikeyan. M.S., MRCS (Edinburg), Mch., gave speech on CARCINOMA BREAST (Yesterday, Today and tomorrow). Dr. B. Kanchana, H.O.D., Department of General Surgery gave a memento to the guest speaker.

AVMC Newsletter A Guest Lecture on Surgical Importance of Spaces of Hand was organised by the Department of Anatomy on ( Wednesday ) between AM for 1 st Year MBBS students at the Physiology Lecture Hall. Dr. T. Rajan, Professor & Head of the Department of Anatomy, AVMC & H delivered the Welcome Address and introduced the Guest Speaker to the students. Dr. S. Ilankathir, Associate Professor in the Department of Anatomy, AVMC & H, presented the bouquet to the Guest Speaker. Dr. V. Gladwin, Associate Professor in the Department of Anatomy, JIPMER delivered the Guest Lecture.

AVMC Newsletter Department of Surgery organizes CANCER BREAST AWARENESS program On the Department of General Surgery conducted a public awareness program on Cancer Breast at 10 a.m. in the OPD reception hall. Dr. B. Kanchana. M.S., FAIS, Professor and H.O.D., Department of General Surgery, welcomed the gatherings. She talked about the screening programme, its importance in detecting cancer breast as early as possible. cancer breast when detected early and treated properly gives a good longevity of life and disease free survival. She said mammography and ultra sonogram of breast are available for free in A.V.M.C. &H, Puducherry. Dr. P. Chellapillai. M.D., D.M., Medical Superintendent, the radiation oncologist gave away the presidential address. He stressed that public should know about the importance of detecting cancer breast early and all treatments and investigations are done free of cost in A.V.M.C. & H, Puducherry and invited all the public to utilize the facilities in A.V.M.C. &H, and get benefitted. Dr. R. Chandrasekar. M.S., Professor, Department of General Surgery talked on preventive measures of carcinoma breast and self examination. Pamphlets on awareness on cancer breast and self examination were distributed to the public. Vertical Integration by Department of General Surgery on PEPTIC ULCER in association with Departments of General Medicine, Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Medical Gastroenterolog, Pharmacology was conducted on
11 11. AVMC Newsletter Vertical Integrated Teaching on Mammary Gland was conducted on by the Department of Anatomy in collaboration with the Departments of Surgery & Pathology. A Horizontal Integrated Lecture on Coronary Circulation was organised by the Department of Anatomy on for 1 st Year MBBS students. Departments of Physiology and Biochemistry also contributed.

A batch of 51 students joined in November EMPOWERING WOMEN Dr. Rachna Singh IPS, SP (North), Puducherry addressed our women faculty, staff and students. She advised everyone to speak up against any injustice against them and be the voice for others as well. She sought help to curb child labour in Puducherry. She also demonstrated few self defense techniques. She requested everybody to have Mitra mobile app to reach Puducherry police for help.
