2 C. Contribution to Science My investigative program has been focused on the following areas: breast density and risk assessment; breast imaging for oncology clinical trials; novel blood biomarkers for early cancer detection; emerging imaging strategies for extent of disease evaluation and preoperative planning; and breast imaging outcomes and quality improvement. I have developed collaborations with faculty both within the Department of Radiology and across Stanford University, including the Health Research and Policy Division of the Department of Medicine, the Informatics Division and Radiological Sciences Laboratory (RSL) of the Department of Radiology, and the Division of Oncology Cancer Genetics Clinic of the Department of Medicine. My prior research activities focused on radiation dose with CT and the associated risk of cancer. As an NIH- funded T32 Research Fellow under the mentorship of Dr. Rebecca Smith - Bindman, I conducted a study of four San Francisco Bay Area hospitals in which I reviewed 1,200 CT examinations and CT radiation dose reports; estimated the effective dose from each examination; and calculated the associated risk of cancer attributable to that effective dose. My study culminated in a 2009 Archives of Internal Medicine publication entitled "Radiation Dose Associated with Common Computed Tomography Examinations and the Associated Lifetime Attributable Risk of Cancer", one of the first articles to raise national attention regarding the issue of medical radiation and the need for clinical practice guidelines to track and reduce dose 1. In the area of breast density and breast cancer risk assessment, I have studied and published on patient awareness of breast density and interest in additional screening tests for women with dense breasts. Based on surveys of patients of both high and low socioeconomic status in both academic and county facilities, my work presented at the 2012 and 2013 RSNA Annual Meetings and published in the Journal of the American College of Radiology (a) revealed the potential for disparity in health care access for women of lower socioeconomic status after the enactment of breast density notification legislation. I served as lead author of a website ( launched in April 2013, with online resources for patients and clinicians developed by the California Breast Density Information Group (CBDIG), a working group of breast radiologists and breast cancer risk specialists in response to breast density notification legislation in California (SB 1538). From 4/1/2013 9/28/2015, there have been 52,499 visitors to the website (86% new, 14% returning) from over 10 countries including the US, Canada, UK, Brazil, Australia, Germany, India, New Zealand, Philippines, and Japan. The website is a featured patient information resource on the ACR website and has also been adapted with permission by University of North Carolina, North Carolina Radiological Society, Massachusetts Radiological Society, Barbara Brodsky Comprehensive Breast Center (BBCBC) at Bryn Mawr Hospital in Pennsylvania, Michigan Cancer Consortium, Radiological Society of New Jersey, and the Oregon Breast and Cervical Cancer Program, for use in response to the passage of legislation in their respective states. I also served as corresponding author on a publication in Radiology which details the multi-institutional and multidisciplinary approach of the CBDIG and offers a framework for responses to similar legislation passed across the United States (b). Most recently, I have served as coinvestigator on an NIH R01-funded study of the genetics of mammographic breast density and breast cancer risk in a Kaiser cohort, in which my role is to facilitate the quantitative estimation of mammographic density on 30,000 mammograms.
