1 CERVICAL CANCER SCREENING Mixco, Guatemala

2 Project Goal Reduce the number of cases of cervical cancer in women in Guatemala through early detection strategies and health education. Project Description Preventing cervical cancer remains a priority in global health especially in developing countries which provide 82% of new cases annually. In Guatemala, cervical cancer represents the leading cause of cancer deaths in women, with a mortality rate of 11 deaths per 100,000 women. In the majority of cases, 80% of these women never received a medical checkup or an early diagnosis. Because of this medical crisis, Food For The Poor, in conjunction with the Guatemalan Association of the Sovereign Order of Malta, have created the Cervical Cancer Screening project. This project proposes to reduce the number of cases of cervical cancer in Guatemala by increasing early diagnoses of the disease by 10%, ultimately reducing the rate of preventable death for women in this region. This initiative seeks to establish a mobile clinic for preventative education of cervical cancer, as well as to establish Cytology Days workshops for the preforming of PAP smear tests for 3,000 women in Mixco and its surrounding municipalities. These events will be supported by volunteers from local committees, as well as from the Order of Malta, the municipality, and the health services of the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance in Guatemala. The PAP smear tests will be sent to a pathologist for analysis and results, and those requiring it will receive hospitalization, surgery, and treatment according to their diagnoses. The direct beneficiaries of this project will be the 3,000 women who receive the PAP smear testing and necessary treatments. The project will also indirectly benefit the half million women of Guatemala who can benefit from the preventative education and early detection strategies implemented by the clinic. Total Project Cost: $39, U (2/16) Page 2

3 An Overview of Guatemala and Mixco The largest country in Central America, Guatemala is home to 15 million people. An estimated 75% of all Guatemalans live in poverty. A sad result of this widespread poverty is that Guatemala has one of the highest rates of chronic child malnutrition in the world. Less than half of rural Guatemalans have access to running water, only a quarter have access to electricity and less than one in ten have access to modern sanitation facilities. Infant, child and maternal mortality rates are among the highest in Latin America. Mixco is a combined urban and rural area extended west of Guatemala City. Separated from the city by canyons, the poor village of Mixco is accessible by bridges only. The population of Mixco is approximately 403,689, which equals to about 3,058 inhabitants per square kilometer. The distribution of land and wealth is very uneven in this region, and so the residents are typically very poor. Consequently, this poverty denies them access to many necessities and prevents them from accessing many important services, especially medical care. In Guatemala there are eight to ten new cases of cervical cancer diagnosed every day, and about five women die from this disease on a daily basis. Tragically, 75% of these cases are diagnosed too late, and worse, about 80% of these women never received a medical checkup whatsoever. The rate of cervical cancer diagnoses in Guatemala is 22 women per 100,000 inhabitants, with peak incidences occurring between the ages of 35 to 54 years old. However, incidences in women as young as 20 are not uncommon. As a result, cervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer death for women in this country. The number of malignant cases of cervical cancer has shown an increase of 11% per year. The situation is worse for Guatemala s poor because of the social and economic constraints that withhold them from access to proper medical attention and treatments. This signifies a major problem for public health. What is even worse is that many cases can be prevented through early detection strategies, preventative education, and public awareness. In other words, many cases of death from this disease can be prevented entirely if the proper measures are implemented, including access to medical care for Guatemala s impoverished women. It is because of this need that the Cervical Cancer Screening project has been developed. With your help, we can improve the health of these poor women, and increase early detection and preventative care strategies. We hope you will join us as we seek to help these deserving women, regardless of religious, political or social predispositions or affiliations. 1515U (2/16) Page 3
