1 WOMEN S BREAST CANCER CLINIC Mixco, Guatemala City, Guatemala
2 Project Goal Provide assistance to support early detection of breast cancer in women living in Mixco, Guatemala, with the aim of ultimately reducing the number of deaths from this disease. Project Description This project aims to contribute to a better quality of life for women through preventive and sexual reproductive education in the 11 zones, which comprise the settlements, hamlets, cantons and municipal area of the municipality of Mixco. In its endeavor to reduce the mortality of women due to breast cancer and to contribute towards their early diagnosis and opportune treatment, volunteers will develop Medical Days for the Prevention of Cancer in Women workshops. These events will benefit 1,500 women listed in the medical registries with breast-related cases. In addition, the project will underwrite the funding of mammography screenings to be conducted in mobile clinics. The details include the following: 1,500 Mammography screenings 12 Months rent space for mobile clinics 12 Salaries for cancer surgeon and assistant 12 Salaries for anesthetists 12 Salaries for nurses and support services 72 Surgical: hospitalization expenses (calculated on approximately 6 surgeries per month for a maximum of 72 surgeries) 12 Salaries for radiologists and assistants The direct beneficiaries will be 1,500 women between the ages of 35 to 60. This project is a joint venture between the Guatemalan Association of Knights of the Order of Malta and Food For The Poor. Total Project Cost: $39, U Page 2
3 An Overview of Guatemala and Mixco The largest country in Central America, Guatemala is home to 15 million people. An estimated 75% of all Guatemalans live in poverty. A sad result of this widespread poverty is that Guatemala has one of the highest rates of chronic child malnutrition in the world. Less than half of all rural Guatemalans have access to running water, only a quarter have access to electricity, and only about one in 10 have access to modern sanitation facilities. Guatemala s severe food insecurity and lack of accessible, affordable medical care has led to high infant, child and maternal mortality rates. In Guatemala, the quality of and access to healthcare are directly related to the socio-economic status of an individual. Adequate healthcare is available only to those who can pay its high cost. Health coverage is so inefficient that it is estimated that more than 40% of the population does not receive any medical services. Health for the urban and rural poor is very limited, especially for indigenous Guatemalan women. The country has the lowest life expectancy of Central America, as is the index of the infant mortality. The funding assigned to health services in Guatemala is very limited. It is estimated that there are only 10 doctors and one hospital bed for every 10,000 people in the population, including those suffering with pneumonia and intestinal infections. These diseases can be prevented easily if the population has access to more quality health services. It is estimated that one woman dies from breast cancer every day in Guatemala. More than 3,000 annual cases of cancer are tended to at the National Cancer Institute, of which 74% are women; 36% of that number lives in the department of Guatemala. These deaths are associated with delayed diagnosis and treatment, and are possibly preventable through education and mammography screening. The number of cases of malignancy, including breast cancer, has indicated a yearly increase of 11%. The highest number of malignant tumors that affect women is cervical cancer at 31%. This is followed by breast cancer at 12%. In the majority of cases, one in three women dies due to lack of early detection and treatment. The importance of the use of mammography has been proven, and thus a guide for opportune treatment. For this reason it is the chosen diagnosis method for this project. With early detection and education we expect that the number of deaths caused by cancer will be reduced for impoverished women in Guatemala. 1606U Page 3
