It looks like she has beautiful new pair of shoes that are too big. I wonder how she will use her new shoes, since they are too big. Let s read and find out Read 1: TEACH TEACH: Push-in story problem that s connected to the story purpose by using the think-aloud strategy (I wonder, I noticed, I was thinking.). This is where you can turn back to previous pages to connect events and infer the story problem. Oh, now I know the problem. Remember back at the beginning of the story (turn page back) when TEACH: Push-in and connect key events that relate to the story problem. Page # Events Page # Previous Event/Explanation 7 The family in this story lives really far away from the United States of America 7 Tía Rosita must live far away, too. She has sent them gifts to show that she is thinking of them. 9 Silvia put on her new shoes, right away 9 I think that Silvia is pleased with her gift. She is anxious to wear her beautiful new shoes. 10 Papa notices that her shoes are too big 10 Oh, now I know the problem. Silvia really likes her new shoes, but they are too big. Let s keep reading to see how she will use them since she can t wear them. 13 Silvia sleeps with the shoes in her bed. 10 Remember when her mom told her to put them away until she can fit them, I am thinking that Silvia likes her shoes so

2 much that she can t put them away. Look she even has them in her bed. 14 The next morning, Silvia tries on her shoes again. 11 Remember, yesterday she tried on her new shoes and they were too big. But it has only been one night! I don t think she has grown into them that quickly. 14 Silvia realizes that they are still too big so she used them to make a bed for her dolls 15 After a week, she tries on the shoes again but they are still big 19 Silvia is anxious to wear her shoes but she keeps using her imagination to come up with new ideas of ways to use them. 20 Silvia really wants to be able to wear her beautiful new shoes. 23 Now, so much time has gone by that Silvia has finally forgotten about her beautiful new shoes. She tried them on so many times but since they were still too big, she 14 Oh, now I see how Silvia solved her problem. Since her new shoes are too big, she realizes that she can use her imagination (pretend) and use the shoes for other things like making the doll bed. 15 I noticed that Silvia continues to use her imagination to figure out how to use the shoes. This time she made a two car train First, she imagined they were dolls for her bed. Then she imagined they were a train. I am thinking that Silvia has to be patient even though she is ready to wear her new shoes Let s look back. When she first got the shoes, she tried them on every day. But they were too big so many times, she has gotten busy doing other things. couldn t wear them. 27 Silvia shoes fit. What an exciting day! Silvia s beautiful shoes finally fit! She really had to be patient and wait a long time before she could wear them. TEACH: Push-in target vocabulary using PAT.
