YOU RE INVITED Our December 19th general meeting will be held at the home of Connie and Paul Clark. Arrival is at 6:00 PM. We appreciate their spirit in opening their home up for our Christmas celebration! Thank you, Paul and Connie Please RSVP to Connie and Paul by telephone at no later than Friday December 14th. We will share a pot luck dinner, so when you call please indicate what you plan to bring. Margot has come up with a creative story for a left/right game. Please bring an ornament in a small paper bag in order to participate. If you have not played this game, as I have not, here s the basic idea. As the story is recited aloud, there are times when the words left and right will be read. When we hear these words, we are to pass our bags to the appropriate direction. When the story is concluded, which ever bag you are holding is your special bag and ornament inside to keep! Sounds fun! Julie and Ken Moebus will be inducted at this event. We are delighted to welcome them officially as part of our Portsmouth Lions club. Please come and show them your support into lionism, as once upon a time this was how you were received. If you ve met Julie and Ken, you will be pleased to celebrate with them. If you have not met them as of yet, I guarantee if you come you will be delighted! Remember that while this is often a festive time for everyone, so many are growing colder as we enter into the winter months. Our first new members of Lion year: Ken and Julie Moebus will be inducted into our club by PCC Mike Baillargeon at a very special ceremony at our annual Holiday Party! PLEASE RSVP to Lion Connie by phone by Friday Dec 14 and plan to welcome our newest members! It should be a fun, festive event, including the ornament swap. BETTER YET invite a friend who might want to join the club and help us serve the community. Be sure to let Connie know what you will bring to share so we do not only end up with all salads or something! We will also take the opportunity to bring any donated pairs of glasses you might have collected, and items for Crossroads House (please check their website for needed items) to use for our Warmth from the Millyard project, in the true spirit of Christmas! Let s really gear up and think of people with whom we enjoy hanging out, or with whom we would like to hang out. OR is there someone you know who really lives to serve others and wants to meet a group of like-minded people? Please invite him/her to dinner. If desired, we will provide a nice, printed invitation with the details of where, when, etc. We still have a goal of 8 more new members before June!!

6 boxes had Apple pie and 6 had pumpkin pie as the desert! Connie and I delivered 2 of the boxes on the way back to the house.

Connie had called each of the recipients and either talked directly or left a message that we were going to be delivering after 11:00 on Sunday.

Margo related that her delivery on Court St was made to a lady who had been sitting in the lobby since 11:00 waiting for her arrival.

All in all, it was a festive and rewarding Sunday afternoon delivering our Portsmouth LIONS Club holiday baskets.

3 December 2012 Portsmouth Lions Page 3 Portsmouth Lions Delivering Thanksgiving Dinners... We were fortunate this year, Janetos in Dover had all 12 boxes ready for Connie and me to pick up on Sunday morning. As the pictures show, they were all in neat boxes. 6 boxes had Apple pie and 6 had pumpkin pie as the desert! Connie and I delivered 2 of the boxes on the way back to the house. One that we might have delivered on the way back did not answer the door when we tried to deliver. I was concerned that we might have the same problems delivering that we had last year. Connie had called each of the recipients and either talked directly or left a message that we were going to be delivering after 11:00 on Sunday. We were fortunate in that all the deliveries by Kim, Margot and Frank were successful. Connie and I made our final delivery later in the afternoon. Margo related that her delivery on Court St was made to a lady who had been sitting in the lobby since 11:00 waiting for her arrival. The box was too heavy for the lady to carry it to her apartment so Margo insisted on doing it for her. All in all, it was a festive and rewarding Sunday afternoon delivering our Portsmouth LIONS Club holiday baskets. Lions Kim and Paul Lions Kim and Connie Lions Paul and Frank (Many thanks to Lion Paul for the photos and our apologies to Lion Margo.) Thank You Kittery Lions... Treasurer Connie recently received a request for a 4-wheel walker from a Portsmouth resident. He received the Lions contact through the Physical Therapy Dept at the Portsmouth Hospital. First thought was to contact Bob Rawding, Rye Lions. They didn't have one, and suggested that she contact Black Bear Medical where they get their supplies. Unfortunately this person was not financially able to buy one from them so she turned to Kittery Lions, Frank Trull. Kittery Lions policy is to assist Maine residents only so he was reluctant to give the go ahead because of that policy, but quickly returned her call and said he didn't see why they couldn't help this person out and they did have the walker in stock. The person was most appreciative when he was given the news that we had found him a walker and went out that very day to the Kittery Lions and picked up his walker. Thank you Kittery Lions!

But first a report on Eyesight and Eyeglasses Collection. Lion Ted Robbins collected 418 pairs of eyeglasses and delivered them to Exeter.

Since I seem to have two specific assignments for the club, Eyesight and the Roar, I plan to use this space to share a variety of things with you. But first a report on Eyesight and Eyeglasses Collection. Lion Ted Robbins collected 418 pairs of eyeglasses and delivered them to Exeter. Lion Ted methodically checks out the eyeglasses collection boxes located around the city including Walmart and delivers hundreds of pairs of glasses each month for processing. Thank you, Ted. My guess is that Lion Ted gives as much of his time to Lions work as anyone in the club. I was quite busy this past month in providing vouchers for Eyesight Services. I received eight applications and issued seven vouchers. I recently received the following note: To Portsmouth Lions Club Thank you for giving me a voucher for eyesight services. I knew my eyesight was getting bad but I did not realize how bad it was now with these new glasses I have I can see everything that was a big blur or missing. I had them checked a year ago and I had 20/20 with an over the counter 150 reading glasses. Now I am and Earlier in the year I was in the hyperbaric oxygen chamber to fix another part of my body and they kept saying it would return to normal and I waited it never has. Thank you again. I can not say how grateful I am. Ah, Tis the Information Age... We received the following request via our web site and would like to share it with you along with the following discussions that took place. Several years ago Carolyn and I shared a wonderful experience with Portsmouth UK Lions at a pub overlooking Portsmouth Harbor, but that s another story. Message from our web site: could you possibly tell me what date your f/christmas will be coming down Highborn Grove as my grandson will be over from Australia he is 3.5 years old and when my 2 children were young it was their highlight of the year to see f/christmas on his sleigh. I find that the Fareham Lions Club has Father Christmas. I believe that the schedule is on its web site so you might check that. Have a wonderful holiday. Two phone numbers as well as names were noted. She passed it on to me. The area code was not familiar. I goggled and found they were land line phones and located in Portsmouth VA. Some more googling found a Portsmouth VA Lion address, sent the information to him and received the following reply: Will deliver these request to our Eye and Hearing Chair this evening. I spoke to one already. There is one situation of which Portsmouth (VA) Lions Club will be responsible for paying for glasses. She was advised to come to a LAMP we are cosponsoring this Saturday and she got very upset about the notion of first come first serve. Lion Ed Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Connie and Paul have graciously opened their home to us for our annual holiday party. We plan a potluck dinner. In order to coordinate the menu and also to get a count of those coming it is important that you please call Connie by Friday, December 14rh. We plan to have an ornament swap, so please bring an ornament in a brown, paper bag. The price of the ornament should not exceed $10. Beverages will be furnished. However, if you have something special you would like to bring, that would be Don t forget... To be eligible to participate in the Left/Right game at our annual holiday party, all you need is an ornament in a paper bag. We will be playing a new game written and orchestrated by Lion Margot
