You can play an important role in saving lives by donating the blood contained in your baby s umbilical cord to LifeCord, a nonprofit, public cord blood bank. Donating blood is free and will not affect you, the baby or the birthing process. To-do list for umbilical cord donor moms Let your obstetrician or midwife know of your desire to donate your cord blood. If possible, pre-register with LifeCord staff. 3 About cord blood donation What is cord blood? Cord blood is the blood remaining in the umbilical cord and placenta after a baby is born. Cord blood is rich with blood-forming cells. How is cord blood used? Each year, thousands of people are diagnosed with cancer and other life-threatening diseases, such as leukemia or sickle cell disease, that can be treated with a cord blood transplant. Cord blood transplants replace diseased blood-forming cells with healthy cells. The treatment process is similar to a bone marrow transplant, except that cord blood is used instead of marrow. Like marrow, cord blood is rich in stem cells which generate new blood cells to resist disease. A cord blood unit does not have to match a patient s tissue type as closely as donated marrow does. This means more patients are able to receive transplants. Who needs a cord blood transplant? Patients in need of a transplant quickly. Cord blood units are stored and ready to use immediately. Patients who have a hard time finding a matched bone marrow donor. Cord blood does not have to match a patient s tissue type as closely as donated bone marrow does. Patients from racially or ethnically diverse communities who often have uncommon tissue types. Because cord blood does not have to match the patient as closely as bone marrow does, it may offer more people from diverse racial and ethnic communities a chance for a cure. What happens to cord blood if it is not donated? The umbilical cord, placenta and lifesaving blood they contain are usually discarded after birth. Is there any cost for donation? There is no cost for donating cord blood to a public cord blood bank such as LifeCord. LifeCord incurs the cost of collecting, testing, processing and storing the cord blood. How is cord blood donated? Donating cord blood to a public cord blood bank involves talking with your doctor or midwife about your decision to donate. If possible, pre-register with LifeCord staff. Upon arriving at the hospital, remind the labor and delivery team that you are donating your umbilical cord blood. The hospital staff will discuss the process with you and obtain your consent. They will collect a small amount of blood from you so that disease testing can be performed. After the delivery of your baby, the umbilical cord and placenta are no longer needed. The blood remaining in the umbilical cord and placenta will be collected and tested. The collection procedure is painless and does not interfere with the normal birthing process. By donating umbilical cord blood, you choose to potentially help someone in need of a lifesaving transplant. Ethnic diversity Not all patients are able to find a match on the National Marrow Donor Program registry. Patients from racially or ethnically diverse backgrounds often have uncommon tissue types. A patient s likelihood of finding a match on the Be The Match Registry is estimated to range from 66 percent to 97 percent, depending on race or ethnicity. African-American or black patients have an estimated 66 percent likelihood of finding a match on the registry.* What this means is that African-Americans are least likely to find a match. By increasing the number of minority cord blood units on the registry, minority patients will be more likely to find a match. *bethematch.org

4 Why should you donate your cord blood to a public bank? One of the most common misconceptions about private cord blood banking is that a child s own cord blood can be transplanted if he develops a disease later in life. In many cases, diseases such as leukemia are genetic, so the cord blood that is banked at birth already carries the same disease. For this reason, the routine storage of umbilical cord blood as biological insurance against future disease is not recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Most people who need transplants use cord blood donated by a sibling or a public cord blood bank. Cord blood recipients have about a 25 percent chance of matching a sibling and a 75 percent chance of finding a match from a public bank. Only a small percentage of babies (estimated at between 1 in 1,000 to 1 in 200,000) ever use their own, privately banked cord blood. 7 About LifeSouth Who we are Founded in 1974, LifeSouth is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community blood supplier for hospitals in Alabama, Florida and Georgia. LifeSouth employs more than 800 people throughout our footprint. With more than 1,000 blood drives a month, 27 donor centers and 45 bloodmobiles, LifeSouth supplies more than 278,000 blood components to more than 100 community hospitals annually.
