1 RHS November Newsletter November 2017 Dear RHS Parents: As we prepare for parent-teacher conferences in a month, I thought the following, reprinted with permission from the November 2017 issue of Parents Still make the difference! They can provide great information about your teen and what she s studying in school. Partnering with your teen s teachers will help make the remainder of the school year a success. To get the most from a parent-teacher conference: Talk to your teen before the meeting. Is there anything she would like you to discuss with the teacher? Bring a list of questions you would like to ask and topics you would like to discuss. Don t rely on your memory. Your teen may not know why her last essay received a poor grade, but the teacher will, so ask! Discuss your teen s behavior. Does she participate in class? Interact with other students? Develop a plan with the teacher. Explore ways you both could support your teen. Talk to your teen after the conference. Let her know what you and her teacher discussed. The H.S. Drama Club presents a Black Box Theater, Wednesday, November 29. Please contact me with any questions or suggestions! Sincerely, Ed Davenport On Wednesday, November 29, students of the HS Drama Club will present a series of presentations in an intimate Black-Box Theater setting. Both actors and audience will be set up on the stage of the HS auditorium. The evening with be composed of three 5-minute student-directed plays, a variety of monologue presentations and poetry recitations by finalists from RHS s second Poetry Out Loud (POL) competition. Come experience drama in a new way. The show begins at 7pm and will last about an hour. A suggested donation of $5.00 at the door will go toward funding activities for the HS Drama Club. 1

2 GUIDANCE NEWS There will be an 11 th grade parent/guardian meeting sponsored by the Guidance Office on Wednesday, November 1st at 7PM in the auditorium. Topics include graduation requirements, post high school planning, financial aid planning and scholarship opportunities. Seniors, please keep your Guidance Counselor informed of your college application process. April 13, , 2018 Those interested in participating in the High School musical take note! The show dates have been set and the HS Musical for 2018 will be announced shortly! Auditions will take place throughout the month of December. Audition preparation sessions will be offered by Mrs Kane. Look for details on the Drama Club website on Mrs. Baer s page. Show rehearsals will begin in January and will be held on Monday and Wednesday nights from 6:30 8:30pm. Stage & Tech Crew will begin Sunday, January 7 and take place every Sunday from 12oon to 5pm thru April. Please plan accordingly. For more information, see Mrs. Baer, Rm 151. RHINEBECK S GOT TALENT!!! TALENT SHOW, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 7 PM It s almost here! Rhinebeck students from both the Bulkeley Middle and Rhinebeck High Schools are getting acts ready for this year s Talent Show. Over 20 students will be participating in this year s show hosted by the HS Drama Club. Performances will include an interesting assortment of talents and is sure to be a full night of lively entertainment. Vetting of acts will take place on Tuesday, November 7, 2:45pm 5pm. Meet in Rm 151. Participants need to bring a copy of any lyrics if singing and any accompanying music recordings. A mandatory dress rehearsal will be held Wednesday, November 15 beginning at 6pm. All participants are expected to attend. There will be a First place prize of $ for both the BMS and HS Most-Talented act as well as an Honorable Mention Prize for each school. Expect a few performances by faculty as well. Save the date for an event that is sure to make you smile!! Thursday, November 16 at 7pm in the HS Auditorium. Arrive at 6pm to shop the Students Club Bazaar and support your favorite club. A suggested donation of $5.00 at the door will go toward funding activities for the HS Drama Club. 3 RHS BAND NEWS On October 18th, the Rhinebeck High School band and music theory classes had the privilege of viewing a presentation by Dr. Christiana Fortune-Reader and Dr. Alex Peh from SUNY New Paltz. The presentation was about Beethoven and his music, specifically how his dramatic transitions and unconventional movements reflect the romanticist ideas of individual emotion and protest of the aristocracy. Dr. Peh used examples from Beethoven s Concerto No. 5 to compare Beethoven s revolutionary style to that of 18th century composers like Mozart and Haydn. The RHS students appreciated the opportunity to learn about classical music genres and their history, as well as listen to some great music. ENVIRONMENTAL CLUB NEWS The Environmental Club has been busy collecting for the David Sheldrick Wildlife Foundation during the month of October. Money collected will go to support the David Sheldrick Elephant orphanage in Kenya!! Thank you for all your support! We also are having a Day of Service on November 4th. Any student who would like to earn community service is welcome to join the Environmental Club weed, cut back and plant perennials in our garden near the auditorium. We start at 9:00 am and will have a pizza lunch at 12:00 after all of our hard work. During the talent show on the 16th of November, the Environmental Club will be selling plants. New members are always welcome in our club!!! 3

5 Keep your kids safe. Get their seasonal flu shots every fall or winter. Seasonal Flu Guide for Parents Is seasonal flu more serious for kids? Flu vaccine may save your child s life. What is seasonal flu? Flu shot or nasalspray vaccine? How else can I protect my child? What are signs of the flu? Infants and young children are at a greater risk for getting seriously ill from the flu. That s why the New York State Department of Health recommends that all children 6 months and older get the seasonal flu vaccine. Most people with seasonal flu are sick for about a week, and then they feel better. But, some people, especially young children, pregnant women, older people, and people with chronic health problems can get very sick. Some can even die. A flu vaccine is the best way to protect your child from seasonal flu. The flu, or influenza, is a viral infection of the nose, throat, and lungs. The flu can spread from person to person. Flu shots can be given to children 6 months and older. A nasal-spray vaccine can be given to healthy children 2 years and older. Children younger than 5 years who have had wheezing in the past year --or any child with chronic health problems --should get the flu shot, not the nasal-spray vaccine. Children younger than 9 years old who get a vaccine for the first time need two doses. 1. Get the seasonal flu vaccine for yourself. 2. Encourage your child s close contacts to get seasonal flu vaccine, too. This is very important if your child is younger than 5 or if he or she has a chronic health problem like asthma (breathing disease) or diabetes (high blood sugar levels). 3. Clean your hands often and cover your coughs and sneezes. This will prevent the spread of germs. 4. Tell your children to: stay away from people who are sick; clean their hands often; keep their hands away from their face, and cover coughs and sneezes to protect others. It s best to use a tissue and quickly throw it away. If you don t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve, not your hands. The flu comes on suddenly. Most people with the flu feel very tired and have a high fever, headache, dry cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, and sore muscles. Some people, especially children, may also have stomach problems and diarrhea. The cough can last two or more weeks. f

6 How does the flu spread? People who have the flu usually cough, sneeze, and have a runny nose. The droplets in a cough, sneeze or runny nose contain the flu virus. Other people can get the flu by breathing in these droplets or by getting them in their nose or mouth. How long can a sick person spread the flu to others? Most healthy adults may be able to spread the flu from one day before getting sick to up to 5 days after getting sick. This can be longer in children and in people who don t fight disease as well (people with weaker immune systems). What should I use to clean hands? Wash your children s hands with soap and water. Clean them for as long as it takes to sing the Happy Birthday song twice. If soap and water are not handy, use wipes or gels with alcohol in them. The gels should be rubbed into hands until the hands are dry. What can I do if my child gets sick? Make sure your child gets plenty of rest and drinks lots of fluids. Talk with your child s doctor before giving your child over-the-counter medicine. If your children or teenagers may have the flu, never give them aspirin, or medicine that has aspirin in it. It could cause serious problems. Can my child go to school/day care with the flu? No. If your child has the flu, he or she should stay home to rest. This helps avoid giving the flu to other children. When can my child go back to school/ day care after having the flu? Children with the flu should be isolated from other people in the home. They should also stay home until they are symptom-free for 24 hours (that is, until they have no fever without the use of fever-control medicines and they feel well for 24 hours). Remind your child to protect others by covering his or her mouth when coughing or sneezing. You may want to send your child to school with some tissues, wipes or gels with alcohol in them.
