NEWSLETTER December 2018 IMPORTANT DATES December 4 PAC meeting December 7 Book Sale And Collaborative lunch December 12 Christmas Concert at the Community Centre December 24 Jan 4/19 winter break Feb 18th Family Day No School February 25th PRO D No school School Closures due to Weather The decision to close schools is based on safety considerations with respect to students, particularly as it relates to bus transportation. Communication of Closure once consultations have occurred with the School District personnel, an alert notice with specific closure information will be posted at the top of the district and all school website homepages, as well as on the district s Facebook page (Campbell River School District - SD72) and Twitter account (@CRSD72). Local radio stations (99.7 FM - 2Day FM; 97.3 FM - The Eagle; 98.9 FM - The Goat; 95.7 FM - Coast FM; 90.5 FM - CBC Victoria; and Spirit Radio), as well as CTV Vancouver Island News, CHEK TV, Global BC News, Shaw Cable, and the City of Campbell River s snow removal line will also be informed. All of these communications will be activated by 7:30 am. Please note that sometimes, given the number of calls that the radio and TV stations receive from other organizations, these media outlets may be delayed in getting closure information out.

Christmas Concert The Christmas Concert is on December 12th at the Community Centre starting at 6:00. Students are asked to arrive at the Community Centre for 5:45 in preparation for this exciting event. There will be a rehearsal for the Christmas concert at the school on December 11th. After the performance, we would really appreciate help putting the chairs away. Thank you for your support. Cannabis and SD72 procedures The upcoming legislative changes concerning the non-medical use of cannabis will have little impact on our schools. Rules regarding smoking and/or being impaired on school property remain the same as in the past for both students and adults. SD72 Operational Procedure 138 Smoking and Electronic Smoking Use has been amended to include the word cannabis along with tobacco. Students and adults who are impaired on school grounds will be dealt with as in the past and the legislation listed below specifically prohibits the use of cannabis on school properties. Signage at school properties will be updated to reflect these changes. Cannabis Control and Licensing Act (CCLA) The Cannabis Control and Licensing Act is guided by the Province s priorities of protecting children and youth, promoting health and safety, keeping the criminal element out of cannabis, keeping B.C. roads safe, and supporting economic development. The Act: Sets 19 as the provincial minimum age to purchase sell or consume cannabis; Prohibits cannabis smoking and vaping everywhere tobacco smoking and vaping are prohibited, as well as at playgrounds, sports fields, skate parks, and other places where children commonly gather; Prohibits the use of cannabis on school properties and in vehicles. Thank you so much to all of the volunteers who put the Quadra Elementary School garden to bed. In order to keep our students And staff healthy PLEASE keep Sick children at home

Quadra Elementary is a nut and fish free school The last day of school before Winter Break is Friday, December 21st. Students return to school on Monday, January Arrival Time at School Too Early Please understand that the time before School is a precious time for teachers to prepare for the day with minimal distractions. Students arriving any time before 8:30 is too early to arrive at school. If children do come this early, they will be asked to go out to the playground. If parents or daycare providers are with their children during this time, please go out front with them. Please be advised that supervision does not start until 8:30 Just Perfect Arrive between 8:30 and 8:40 so your child, is ready to go to class at 8:40 when the first bell rings. Please be in class and ready to start by the final bell at 8:45. Late Students arriving after 8:45 are a concern to us. Coming late means that initial key information is missed and it is disruptive to the rest of the class. If coming late is unavoidable, please make sure that your child checks in with Mrs. Oswald in the office. She needs to write student names on her late list, so please stop and wait until she says she had done so. DECEMBER PAC NEWS Next PAC meeting: Tuesday, December 4th at 6:30 pm in the Library. All parents/ guardians are welcome to attend. We look forward to seeing you there. Hello Quadra Elementary Families, Thanks for all your support with the PAC fundraisers, and we hope your children have been enjoying the collaborative lunches. Please join our Facebook group to hear all about the activities of your PAC (Parent Advisory Committee) and other information useful to the school community. This is a closed group for families of kids in our school. Search for "Quadra Elementary P.A.C. SD 72" on Facebook to join the group. The FB page has snippets of news, as well as PAC meeting minutes, agendas, meeting dates/times. For those of you not on FaceBook, there is also a PAC noticeboard near the gym in the school. We will be posting a copy of the minutes and other information on there. And if you would prefer to contact a member of this year s PAC Executive for 2018/19 directly, they are: President: Deb Cowper Vice-President: Sarah Johnston Treasurer: Iris Wunsch Secretary: Bryce Young

With cooler, wet weather conditions, students are encouraged to wear jackets and footwear that will keep them warm and dry. We are still trying to spend as much time outdoors as possible, so please remember to dress your child appropriately for the weather. A change of clothes is necessary to have at school in case of accidents or spills. Please send an extra set of clothes in your child`s backpack. Parents may need to be contacted during school to bring in replacement clothing for urgent situations. Lately the children have been playing in puddles outside and coming into class very wet. PLEASE ensure they have an extra set of clothing and footwear. Wishing all of our students and families a Very... Merry Christmas And Happy New Year

Preventing Colds And Influenza (Flu) Cold and influenza season is here. As the weather gets cooler and we move indoors, so do germs. Children need reminders to decrease the risk of colds and flu in your house by: Washing hands often Coughing and sneezing into their elbow Not sharing facecloths or towels Keeping hands away from nose and mouth Not sharing food or drink with others To help limit the spread of germs, please keep your child at home if they are feverish, coughing a lot, has a thick yellow or green discharge from the nose, or is otherwise obviously unwell. Remember: Viruses cause colds and influenza The most effective treatment for a cold is rest and fluids The influenza vaccine will protect against specific types of influenza Antibiotics will not make a cold or other virus go away faster Call your doctor if your child has an earache, fever higher than 39 o C (102 o F), rash, is very sleepy, very cranky or fussy, has trouble breathing or a cough that will not go away. Handwashing is the most effective way to stop the spread of germs that cause colds, influenza, diarrhea, and other illnesses Wash hands, before and after eating or handling food, after using the toilet, handling pets, coughing, sneezing, or wiping noses For more information contact: Your local Public Health Unit HealthLinkBC or dial (a free call) Your doctor
