Albert Einstein Valentine s Day With Valentine s Day coming up, we want to send a quick reminder about our Wellness Policy. Valentines brought to school that include candy will need to be enjoyed at home. Beyond Valentine s Day, please continue to bring healthy snacks and treats for the classroom and to keep allergies in mind. We are thankful for the excellent job parents and teachers are doing in following the Wellness Policy this year. We appreciate your support now and for the rest of the year. Winter Weather As we move into winter, please make sure your son or daughter is prepared for the weather. We believe that fresh air and exercise are important so we try to have outdoor recess whenever possible. If students want to wear shorts to school, they should pack sweatpants to go over them while at recess. To play in the snow students need boots and snow pants. 2 Page 2 Curriculum News: 3rd Grade Literacy Third Graders had a great time with our Empowering Writers narrative descriptive writing piece for Macy s Day Parade floats. Students designed a float for the parade and wrote a descriptive piece about their balloon. We had the opportunity to share this writing with second graders. Students have also been writing in science. We have been working on echoing the question in an open response as we use each STEMscopedia to learn more about the topic in each scope. We have also been researching and writing about Endangered Animals. In the new year we will continue to write across the curriculum. Third Graders will be writing opinion pieces using a variety of leads aimed at conveying a strong opinion. Reading Groups are going great! We have had three main focus strategies during November and December. One is Visualizing, or making a movie in your mind as you read. Another is Sequencing, or relaying the events in a story in order. We have also been working on understanding the main idea in a nonfiction piece of text. In the new year we will focus on Context Clues, or using the words in the sentence and the paragraph to work out the meaning of an unknown word. We will also focus on Stop and Think. In our groups we are working on reading slowly and truly understanding what is happening in the story. You can encourage both of these strategies at home. Math We are starting Multiplication and Division! Chapter 6 focuses specifically on the multiplication table of 6, 7 and 8, but we started by going right back to the beginning to gain a stronger understanding of the meaning of multiplying and dividing and how the two concepts are directly related. We are using a lot of manipulatives to create equal groups and students have made their own multiplication charts. Any practice you can do at home will really help to support your child s understanding of the concepts. Chapters 6 through 9 are all related to Multiplication and Division so you can expect your child to be fully immersed in these concepts for many weeks. We are so lucky to have had Reflex Math funded by the Triton Education Foundation. All third graders will have an account right through the summer of You can encourage your child to earn their green light! Science Third Graders are learning all about Plant and Animal Extinction and Fossils. They are learning how paleontologists use fossils to determine the adaptations of plants and animals that are now extinct. In the new year we will be studying about Weather and Climate. Students will graph weather data from around the world. The Massachusetts Audubon at Joppa Flats will be coming in to do a presentation on Weather and Data on February 15th. We are looking forward to their visit! Social Studies The month of November had us focusing on the early settlers of Massachusetts and on the native people who lived here at the time. Students learned all about native life. They learned about The Mayflower and the Pilgrims and Puritans who arrived to settle in the new world. In January our focus will be on the 13 original colonies and colonial life. We will also be starting to study the biographies of historical figures in Massachusetts history. This will lead up to a bigger biography project in the spring! Stay tuned for our Colonial Day walking field trip to sites all around Newbury and to Spencer Pierce Little Farm.

3 Page 3 When Should My Child Stay Home from School? - Tara O Keefe, RN, NCSN Fever: Any fever degrees or more Temperature should be less than 100 degrees for 24 hours without fever reducing medication such as Ibuprofen or Tylenol. Antibiotics: Antibiotics prescribed for a contagious illness such as strep throat should be taken for 24 hours before returning to school. Rash: Any unusual rash (not due to allergies) or if rash is accompanied by a fever. Vomiting/Diarrhea: Please keep child home until no vomiting/diarrhea has occurred for 24 hours. Red Eyes: The white of the eye appears red and has yellow or green crusty drainage; this could require antibiotics. NOTE: These are only guidelines, but they do help keep our students healthy. You know your child best. Always contact your physician for medical concerns or questions. Did you Know? Children suffer from approximately 6-10 more colds per year than adults do. Colds can produce symptoms of nasal congestion, runny nose, cough and mild fever lasting from 7-10 days. (Bell, 2016) Children cannot be excluded from school for a cold without fever, regardless of cough or nasal congestion unless the child themselves do not feel well enough to attend school. Our best defense is hand hygiene. Flu Facts: The flu (influenza) is a highly contagious respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses. It is most often spread when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or speaks, sending germs into the air. The virus can be inhaled by anyone nearby. It can also be spread when touching a surface with the germs on it. You pick up germs and infect yourself when you touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. To prevent the spread of and/or contact with these germs, cover coughs and sneezes, wash hands frequently, & keep hands away from your eyes, nose, and mouth. If you re not sure it s the flu, keep these things in mind. The onset of symptoms is often sudden (symptoms of a cold come on gradually). People describe feeling like they ve been hit by a truck. Symptoms can be mild or severe. If mild, they can become severe without much notice. Common symptoms of the flu include: Fever (usually high), headache, muscle aches, chills, extreme tiredness, and dry cough. A runny nose may also occur but is more common in children than adults. Stomach symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, may also occur but are more common in children than adults. Best Defense to Stay Healthy this Season: Hand Wash, Hand Wash, Hand Wash! Some viruses -- tiny living things that cause colds -- can live on surfaces for hours. Regular hand washing is your best strategy to keep them from getting inside your body. And of course, if you're the one who's sick, washing up will keep you from spreading your germs (WEB MD). In hopes of curing our children, we can sometimes rush to purchase OTC cough and cold drugs, which lack clinical efficacy. (Bell, 2016). However, have you tried these Natural Remedies that have been endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics? (Bell, 2016) nasal spray and/or cold air humidifier for nasal congestion Tylenol and/or Ibuprofen for fevers honey for a cough.
