1 The Wildcat Lone Pine Elementary School Message from the Principal Hello Lone Pine Families, Can you believe there is only one week left of our 2nd quarter of school? That means we are nearly half way through the year! That being said, I can assure you that learning is our highest priority throughout Lone Pine. You can see students writing Lewis & Clark reports, busily completing i-ready math and reading mid-year assessments, students competing in our Geography Bee, and ukulele s strumming along every Thursday afternoon. It is pure joy to be among active and engaged learners on a daily basis. Speaking of learning, coming soon on Monday, February 4, parents are going to be invited to come to school and participate in your child s reading class! You can join your child for breakfast that morning, and then go to their class to see authentic reading instruction occurring. After visiting for about an hour, parents will be invited back to the cafeteria where they will learn a few more tricks and strategies to promote reading in your own home. You will shortly after receive a free book to take home as we thank you for visiting. Please plan on joining us for about two hours on that Monday morning, and you will be amazed at the wonderful teaching that is occurring with your children at Lone Pine. 2 National Geographic Bee The following students quali ed for the Lone Pine nals of the National Geographic Bee. The will compete for the statewide bee on Friday, January 25. 4 Safety Concern Please remember for the safety of our students the bus loading zone on the north end of the school is for bus drop off and pickup ONLY. Parents are not permitted to pull into this driveway at any time before, during, or after school.

5 Box Tops Thank you all for collecting those Box Tops! You helped the Lone Pine PTO earn $ for the students and school! The two classes that collected the most were Mrs. Johnson with 651 and Mr. Pyle with 353. Great job! The next submission date is March 1st. Students will be bringing home a Box Top sheet as a FUN way to collect those Box Tops during the winter break and holiday cooking! Great Body Shop Reminder Health Curriculum Opt Out forms were due this week. If you neglected to turn one in please make sure you do so immediately after the break. 7 The peak of the cold and u season is upon us. To prevent widespread u in the school, we recommend that your child stay home from school if experiencing u or cold symptoms. To decide whether or not to send your child to school, please consider the following guidelines: Consider keeping your child at home for an extra day of rest and observation if he or she has any of the following symptoms: Very stuffy or runny nose and/or cough Mild sore throat (no fever, no known exposure to strep) Headache Mild stomach ache De nitely keep your child at home for treatment and observation if he or she has any of these symptoms: Fever (greater than degrees by mount and your child may return to school only after his or her temperature has been consistently below 100 degrees, by mouth, for a minimum of 24 hours) Vomiting (even once) Diarrhea Chills General malaise or feelings of fatigue, discomfort, weakness or muscle aches Frequent congested (wet) or croupy cough Lots of nasal congestion with frequent blowing of nose To help prevent the u and other colds, teach your children good hygiene habits: Wash hands frequently Do not touch eyes, nose or mouth Cover mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing, use a paper tissue, throw it away and then wash hands Avoid close contact with people who are sick. Colds are the most contagious during the rst 48 hours. A child who has a fever should remain at home until "fever free" for a minimum of 24 hours. A child who has started antibiotics needs to be on the medication for 48 hours before considered non-contagious and able to return to school. Often when a child awakens with vague complaints (the way colds an u begin) it is wise to observe your child at home for an hour or two before deciding whether or not to bring to school. Your child should be physically able to participate in all school activities on return to school. Keeping a sick child at home will minimize the spread of infections and viruses in the classroom.
