2 Maureen Goulden Health Care Assistant and Gina Donnelly Receptionist. As you may know Maureen has been a member of the surgery for 23 years and Gina for 11 years. Both have been loyal, hardworking members of the team. Can we say a BIG thank you to Maureen and Gina for their hard work and I m sure that you all would want to join us in wishing them well in the future. They will both be missed by all of us here at the surgery. Dr Baker, will be going on Maternity from the 20 th October Her baby is due the end of November. She will be back in 2015 All the Dr s and staff wish her well and will keep you all informed of their progress. Dr Griffiths will be going on extended leave from the 20 th October 2014 and will be back on 20 th April 2015 This surgery prides itself in acting in the best interest of ALL patients Sometimes Doctors find that it is not possible to fully explain and listen to the patient in the allotted time. (The relationship between Doctor and Patient is built in those moments). Sometimes you may have to wait an extra little while when the Doctor finds it necessary to spend extra, unscheduled time in a particular situation. Therefore, we would like to thank you ALL for being an understanding, PATIENT Patient. (PS. 3 After last year s success of running the FLU Clinic on a Saturday morning, the surgery will be holding a clinic on a Saturday again this year. This clinic will run on Saturday 4 th October Please ring the surgery in September to book an appointment or ask at reception. 4 Asthma is a condition that affects the airways the small tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs. When a person with Asthma comes into contact with something that irritates their airways (an asthma trigger), the muscles around the walls of the airways tighten so that the airways become narrower and the lining of the airways becomes inflamed and start to swell. Sometimes, sticky mucus or phlegm builds up, which can further narrow the airways. These reactions cause the airways to become narrower and irritated making it difficult to breath and leading to symptoms of asthma. Many aspects of modern lifestyles such as changes in housing and diet and a more hygienic environment may have contributed to a rise in Asthma. What we do know is that you re more likely to develop asthma if you have a family history of asthma, eczema or allergies. It s likely that this family history, combined with certain environmental factors, influences whether or not someone develops Asthma. The usual symptoms of asthma are: Coughing Wheezing Shortness of breath Tightness in the chest Not everyone will get these symptoms. Some people experience them from time to time; a few people may experience these symptoms all the time. This is why we ask that you make sure you have an Asthma Check every year at your GP surgery, whether your symptoms are well controlled or more often difficult to control. This review is where you re GP or Practice Nurse can check that you are taking your inhaler correctly and also ways in controlling your symptoms better. Please make an appointment at the surgery now if you have not had your Asthma monitored by a Practice Nurse at Old Hall Surgery.

5 We will also be offering a Pneumovax vaccination (vaccine against pneumonia) to over 65 s if you haven t already had one. Please mention this to the Receptionist when booking your appointment that you would like to have with a flu vaccination. A vaccine to prevent shingles, a common, painful skin disease is now available on the NHS to people aged 70 and aged 78 & 79. The shingles vaccine is given as a single injection. Unlike the flu jab, you'll only need to have the vaccination once. The vaccine is expected to reduce your risk of getting shingles. If you are unlucky enough to go on to have the disease, your symptoms may be milder and the illness shorter. You can have this vaccination even if you have had shingles in the past. Shingles can be very painful and uncomfortable. Some people are left with pain lasting for years after the initial rash has healed. And shingles is fatal for around 1 in 1,000 over-70s who develop it. Please make an appointment at Reception for the Practice Nurse. The flu vaccine for children is given as a single dose of nasal spray squirted up each nostril. Not only is it needle-free (a big advantage for children), the nasal spray works even better than the injected flu vaccine with fewer side effects. It s quick and painless and will mean your child is less likely to become ill if they come into contact with the flu virus. Flu can be very unpleasant for children. They have the same symptoms as adults including fever, chills, aching muscles, headache, stuffy nose, dry cough and sore throat lasting up to a week. Some children develop a very high fever or complications of flu such as bronchitis, pneumonia and painful middle ear infection. They may need hospital treatment, and very occasionally a child may die from flu. For children with long-term health conditions such as diabetes, asthma, heart disease or lung disease, getting flu can be very serious as they are more at risk of developing serious complications.
