Seasonal flu vaccine is considered as the best means of protection from flu 6
Flu vaccination for HCW s is an integral component of Infection Control within healthcare settings 1. HCW s have increased risk 2. Employer responsibility duty of care 3. Outbreak management plans
ALL STAFF Temporary exclusion Fever on the day >38degrees C Acute infectious illness Received immunoglobulin in last 3 months Permanent exclusion History of previous severe reaction Allergy to any component of the vaccine A word on egg allergy A word on pregnancy and breast feeding
Inactivated vaccine Immune system response makes protective antibodies (takes about 14-21days) These antibodies then protect when in contact with actual flu
In use for 60+ years Millions of people worldwide have received it Reactions reported are mild and self limiting Licensed by European Medicines Agency Ongoing monitoring of side effects Side effects must be reported to Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA)
Most Commonly reported (>1/100 but <1/10) Headache Injection site pain, tenderness, bruising Sweating Fever Fatigue Myalgia Other adverse reactions Reporting of all suspected adverse reactions is important 11
Effectiveness depends on how closely circulating flu matches strains in vaccine Strains matched by WHO Annual vaccination important flu virus is constantly changing Considered to be up to 70-90% effective <65yrs 30-40% effective in those over 65yrs
A/Michigan/45/2015 (H1N1)pdm09-like strain A/Hong Kong/4801/2014 (H3N2) - like strain B/ Brisbane/60/2008 -like strain
National lead Dr. Kevin Kelleher Lead for HSE South Dr. Fiona Ryan 40% HCW uptake target Uptake among Irish HCWs poor 1. National uptake is 33% approx. (64% - 6%) 2. 10% in Kerry % for UHK in
Uptake by employee group Management & Administration 16% Medical 26.5% Health & Social Care Prof 23.5% Nursing 5.5% Support Staff General 13% Total 10%
Since I am around sick people all the time, I am already immune to the flu
The flu virus changes each year so the immune system cannot protect you from something it doesn t recognise HCW are at increased risk over general population Flu is highly infectious incl 1 day before symptoms Healthy people can get seriously ill with flu
The flu vaccine changes slightly each year because the virus is constantly changing A number of staff who get the flu vaccine each year report that they do not even get the common cold anymore
Infectious 1 day before the onset of symptoms and up to 7 days after the onset of symptoms Some staff can have mild symptoms or even subclinical infection and so do not recognise it but are infectious
Hand hygiene is essential BUT Flu vaccination is the most effective protection against flu
..this is not possible. Flu virus changes every year and subsequently the flu vaccine is updated every year. Your body cannot protect itself from new types of flu because your immune system does not recognise it. Annual vaccination is required 10/9/
The vaccine is Inactivated so it cannot cause the flu Some side effects are similar to flu but are not the flu, are mild and self limiting Doesn t protect for days so you are still at risk if exposed to flu before vaccine works Flu vaccine protects against flu virus not other viruses in circulation
Most Commonly reported (>1/100 but <1/10) Headache Injection site pain, tenderness, bruising Sweating Fever Fatigue Myalgia Other adverse reactions allergic, vas Reporting of all suspected adverse reactions important 10/9/
The vaccine takes days to be effective 70-90% Effective in those <65yrs Vaccine protects against flu virus and not other circulating viruses 30-40% effective in >65yrs and for those who are immunocompromised but it does lessen severity
Important Message to all HCWs Get the vaccine, not the flu! Protect yourselves, your loved ones and your patients 25
