2 Manager s Moment By: Kim Boyd 3 Steps to fight the flu take the following actions to protect yourself and others from the flu 1. Take time to get a flu vaccine. 2. Take everyday preventive actions to stop the spread of germs. 3. Take flu antiviral drugs if your doctor prescribes them. Focus on the everyday preventive actions you can take at home and at work to stop the spread of germs Try to avoid close contact with sick people, and limit contact with others as much as possible if you are sick. If you get sick with flu-like illness, the CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. The fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. Wash your hands often and properly with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way. Make sure that your facility has a plan for fighting flu and other illnesses as well as a plan to respond if an outbreak of flu or another illness occurs. Routinely clean frequently-touched objects and surfaces, including doorknobs, keyboards and phones, to help remove germs. Make sure your facility has an adequate supply of tissues, soap, paper towels, alcohol based hand rubs and disposable wipes. Touch-free towel and soap dispensing systems are a great way to help control the spread of germs. Setting up a hand sanitizer station/stand at entrances is also, a great way to help control the spread of germs. Train others on how to do your job so they can cover for you in case you or a family member gets sick and you have to stay home. If you begin to feel sick while at work, go home as soon as possible. Enjoy the holidays with your loved ones and remember to smile, laugh and hug through the holidays! As always thank you for sharing your loved one s with our Country Meadow Place family!
3 By: Lee Hogg Nurses Corner Fall is upon us and the flu season is around the corner. Country Meadow Place had our flu clinic OCT 10, I have a few vaccines left for new employees and residents if wanted. I sent copies of the signed permission slips to all providers so their medical records could be updated. The person asks the same questions repeatedly. The person is suffering from memory loss, which in turn creates a keen sense of insecurity and uncertainty. They may be asking the same questions repeatedly because they seek reassurance and security, or perhaps your earlier answers seemed vague or unclear. They may sense you are avoiding the answer, which could heighten their sense of insecurity. In more advance stages, memory impairment may be so severe that she does not recall asking the questions, or may feel threatened by your answer. For example, if they ask repeatly when she is going to the doctor. The doctor may be a source of insecurity for them. Helpful responses: Respond clearly, slowly, and concretely to questions. Have the person repeat what you said. If you suspect that your earlier answer disturbed the person, provide reassurance and/or information that will set her mind at rest. Distract other person into other activity or other topics of discussion and ignore further questions. Avoid arguing or responding with anger; do not rebuke the person for the memory problem. Write down the information in question for the person who can still read. Subtle changes in personality can represent an early signal that a problem exists. If the person realizes that they are acting in ways which are not like him, they may fear that they are having a nervous breakdown or losing their mind.
4 New Traits: Socially withdrawn Worried, easily upset Selfish, demanding Paranoid Excessively emotional Carless Poor Judgment Sexually demanding Unfriendly, hostile Dishonest Rigid Uncaring Accept personality changes as results of, or reactions to, brain impairment. Paranoid Excessively emotional Carless Poor Judgment Sexually demanding Unfriendly, hostile Dishonest Rigid Uncaring Accept personality changes as results of, or reactions to, brain impairment. Try to satisfy the needs underlying behavior, such as the person s need for security, self-esteem, dignity, and love.
5 In the Kitchen with Susan Gonnerman Ingredients Strawberry Pie in a jar 1 box Pillsbury Refrigerated Pie Crusts (2 crusts per box), softened as directed on box 2 pounds strawberries, hulled and divided 1/3 cup pure maple syrup 2 tablespoons brown sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Zest from 1 lemon Whipped cream, for topping Cinnamon sugar, for topping Small cookies made from leftover crust for serving (if desired) Steps Preheat oven to 350ºF. Grease four 8-ounce wide-mouth canning jars with cooking spray. Unroll your pie crusts and lay them on a clean surface. Use a knife to cut out four 6-inch circles. Carefully press the dough into the bottom of the jars and up the sides. Place a piece of parchment paper in each jar to cover the dough. Add pie weights or dried beans on top of the parchment and bake for minutes or until the crust is golden brown. Let cool completely before removing the parchment paper and pie weights. Meanwhile, add 1 pound of strawberries, the maple syrup, brown sugar and vanilla to a saucepan. Bring the sauce to a boil and simmer 8-10 minutes. Use a fork to mash the strawberries. Remove from the heat and allow to cool 5 minutes. Divide the remaining pound of strawberries among the 4 pie-crust-filled jars. Drizzle the strawberry sauce evenly over the strawberries. Cover and place in the fridge for 2 hours OR serve warm. If desired, serve with a dollop of whipped cream and a mini pie-crust cookie dusted with cinnamon sugar.
