5 What is Biosecurity? Measures to protect against any infectious agent, whether bacterial, fungal, viral or parasitic. Prevent spread within a premises Prevent introduction to premises

6 Biosecurity Goals Prevent spread of infection from: Humans (shoes, clothing, hands) Vehicles (contaminated tires) Animals (domestic and wild, rodents) Carcasses (improper disposal) Avian Flocks (domestic and wild)

8 Keep Your Distance Restrict access to birds Isolate birds from visitors Visitors: repairmen, neighbors, family, friends Minimize contact with wild birds Protect birds from rodents and pests Fence off area where birds are located

9 Keep it Clean Have dedicated shoes and clothes to wear only around your birds Keep them clean! Wash hands with soap and water Clean cages, feeders, waterers routinely 1:10 household bleach solution (1/4 cup bleach to 2 1/4 cups water) Care for young birds first! Sick birds last!

10 Don t Carry Disease Home Clean and disinfect vehicles, cages, and equipment routinely Keep traveling birds separate from flock for at least 2 weeks Isolate new additions from flock for 30 days

11 Don t Borrow Disease from Your Neighbor Do not share birds or equipment Clean and disinfect equipment before returning home Remember clothes, shoes, vehicles

12 Know the Signs of Disease (What is Normal ) Early detection helps prevent spread Sudden death Diarrhea Drop in egg production, thin-shells, misshapen eggs Sneezing, coughing, wheezing Loss of energy and appetite Swelling or discoloration of wattles, combs or legs
