18 Learn more about RV at rsvshield.ca What is RV? RV stands for respiratory syncytial virus. RV is a very common virus in infancy and early childhood. It is the most frequent cause of bronchiolitis and pneumonia during the first year of life and infects almost all children by the age of 2-3 years. -3 RV infections tend to happen from fall to spring in temperate climates such as Canada, but RV season may vary by region. It is best to ask your doctor when RV occurs in your local area. How serious is RV? In many babies, RV causes a mild cold. 3 But in certain cases, most often in premature infants and in babies with chronic lung disease or congenital heart disease, RV can cause an infection of the lungs. When this happens babies can then become very sick and may require hospitalization.,3 What are the symptoms of RV? he symptoms of RV may be like a cold at first and can include: Fever Runny nose Other cold-like symptoms,3 he symptoms of RV may get worse after it gets into the lungs. hese symptoms can include: Deeper and more frequent coughing Difficulty breathing, including wheezing (a whistling sound) and rapid breathing Blue lips or fingernails Dehydration Difficulty breastfeeding or bottle-feeding3 Is it easy to catch RV? Yes, it is easy to catch RV. RV is a very common virus that is spread by any physical contact-such as touching, kissing or shaking hands with an infected person.,4 he germs are also spread through the air when an infected person sneezes or coughs.,4 RV can live for hours on a countertop or on a used tissue. RV infection is very common in crowded living areas and daycare centres.,4 A person can be exposed to the virus and give it to others without knowing it. hese are all reasons why you must be very careful and take steps to prevent your baby from being exposed to RV. How to reduce the risk of RV infection? here are several steps which you, as parents, can take to help reduce the risk of RV infection, both at home and away from home. Wash hands with warm water and soap before touching the baby. If you have a cold or fever, be aware that kissing the baby can spread the infection. Hug your baby gently, or stroke your baby s head instead. 4 If other young children have a cold or fever, try to keep them away from the baby. his is hard to do, since young children will not understand the reason why they can t be around the baby. You might want to set up a special place for other young children in the house, just as the baby has a special place. Put colouring books and other quiet activities in the special place. Keep people with cold symptoms or fever away from baby. Keep your baby away from crowded places (especially daycares, shopping centers, large family gatherings ).,4 Do not smoke around the baby. Ban smoking inside your house.. he Hospital for ick Children. AboutKidsHealth.
