GSK Verbal Submission Presentation to the Health Select Committee inquiry into how to improve completion rates of childhood immunisations April 28th 2010 Geoff McDonald: General Manager Anna Stove: Head of Vaccines
GSK recommends a complete approach to Vaccination in New Zealand 1. Confident Government fully committed to the value of vaccination 2. A comprehensive schedule covering all vaccine preventable diseases 3. Targeted education programmes for non vaccinators
Political Leadership and Action is critical New NZ Government has set 6 new priority health targets Shorter stays in emergency e departments Improved access to elective surgery Shorter waits for cancer treatment Increased immunization Better help for smokers to quit Better diabetes and cardiovascular services
For over 10 years varicella has been clinically recommended to be added onto the NZ schedule

Focused Health Provider education is key
What is GSK doing. Market research understand the current behavioural environment in NZ Clinical research understand the burden of disease in NZ Strategic purchasing & supply significant health cost savings to the NZ Government
Support MoH to develop and implement Education programmes to increase vaccination coverage
Invest in NZ clinical research to understand the burden of disease and NZ specific epidemiology Ear infections (OM) is debilitating, can impact hearing and cause significant delays in learning and development Burden of illness -hospitals : This NZ study estimated t the annual number of hospital admissions for OM in children <5 years of age Key results: 5000 hospital admissions per annum for children <5years of age with OM Medical admission rates for Maori and Pacific children almost twice those of European, suggesting they experience more severe disease OM primary care incidence 2009: This study assessed the incidence of acute OM in children <5 years of age presenting to primary care in New Zealand Key results- 83,000 new episodes of acute OM per annum. This study provides a baseline to measure the impact of PCV on the incidence of acute OM in primary care in New Zealand
GSK is committed to developing innovative life saving vaccines Identify Antigens Produce Antigens Pre-Clinical Testing Clinical Phase I Proof of Phase II Concept Phase III File Registration/ Post Marketing 0 years Costs between billion years Phase I Phase II Phase III HIV Mosquirix Malaria Simplirix Herpes Simplex Virus Streptococcus pneumoniae adult Tuberculosis New generation seasonal flu Cytomegalovirus Herpes Zoster MAGE-A3 A3 ASCI Non Small Cell Lung Cancer (1) NTHi-Pneumo Dengue Flu Pre-pandemic (Quebec) * WT1 Acute myelogenous leukaemia (1) Flu Pandemic (Quebec) * Vaccine candidate containing a GSK proprietary Adjuvant System MAGE-A3 ASCI Melanoma ea a (1) * In-licensed or other third-party alliance (1) Antigen-Specific Cancer Immunotherapeutics (ASCI)
