14 Diagnosis: detection of rabies antigen The fluorescent antibody test (FAT) is considered the gold standard for rabies diagnosis. Specific aggregates of rabies virus antigen are detected by their fluorescence. The FAT is accurate, sensitive and rapid. Results can often be obtained within 1 to 2 hours of receipt of the specimen.
