6 What do you know about strep throat? According to the Union County Health Department, there have been recent reports of strep throat in Union County. Time to know the facts and keep everyone healthy. Strep throat symptoms start 1 to 3 days after exposure and may include sore throat, trouble swallowing, fever, headache, swollen lymph nodes in neck, white patches in throat, nausea and decreased appetite. Some people can develop a red rash all over their body that feels like sandpaper. When this occurs, the illness is called scarlet fever. Strep throat can spread through direct contact from respiratory secretions from the nose or throat of persons who are infected (coughing, sneezing, sharing drinking glasses/eating utensils with someone infected.) It can spread until 24 hours after antibiotic treatment or days if untreated. So, what can you do? Wash hands frequently and thoroughly. Avoid sharing personal items (drinking cups, utensils.) Use sanitizing solution on shared toys and other potentially contaminated items. Cover mouth with tissue or arm when coughing or sneezing. Properly dispose of tissues. Children should not return to school or childcare until at least 24 hours after starting antibiotic treatment and the fever is gone. Finish prescribed antibiotics. What about the flu? US flu markers are still climbing steadily, with the virus linked to nine more deaths in children, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Influenza is a highly contagious viral infection and is more severe than the common cold. The flu often starts with an abrupt onset of symptoms

7 including fever or chills, headache, soreness and the "feeling that you don't want to get out of bed." Children, elderly and those with chronic conditions are at a higher risk of complications. So, what can you do? Get plenty of fluids. Get plenty of rest. Stay home from school and/or work. Seek medical care if there is difficulty Get vaccinated-there is still time to get a flu shot! Stay Healthy! Union County Board of Developmental Disabilities Safety Committee IRS form 1095-C was passed out on Monday to staff. If you worked for the Board in 2016 and did not receive this form, please let Laura M. know. You need to have this for tax purposes regardless of whether or not you received insurance benefits from the Board. The form does not need to be filed with your returns, just kept for your records. Thanks, Laura Michalak Director of Operations
