Innovators are eager people, and they are interested in trying new things. They are adventurous, and they often have friends with similar interests. They work with their friends and invent new things. An innovator is not afraid of failure and tries risky things that other people cannot imagine doing. Innovators can see a future that other people cannot see. The first people with a new invention are the early adopters. These people do not think of the inventions, but they are interested in trying new things. Innovators look to early adopters when they invent. They value and trust the opinions of the early adopters and want them to use their inventions. Early adopters can see the use of new things, and after they start using something, more people want the invention. Not everyone in the world can be an inventor or try things first. Some people have personalities that make them take risks, and others do not. How about you? Are you an innovator or an early adopter? Were you one of the first people in your community with a cell phone or one of the last? Can you imagine inventing something new or are you a person who waits until other people try things first? We can t all be innovators, but people like Ryan make our future more interesting. 93. The main idea of the article is. A) early adopters and inventions B) the types of people who invent and are interested in inventions C) how to be an inventor D) Ryan Patterson and his inventions 94. The author of this article implies that. A) innovators are not risk takers C) everyone cannot be an inventor B) we are all innovators D) the future needs interesting adopters 95. The word invention is closest in meaning to. 8

9 A) new thing B) machine C) risk taker D) old thing 96. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a quality of an early adopter? TEXT 2 A) valued by innovators C) tries new things B) invents new things D) influences people to use new things Do you want to know the best way to make decisions? First you must understand that you have two different minds: conscious and unconscious. Your conscious mind is the one you are aware of when you re thinking. It often uses words to form thoughts, and it feels like a rational conversation going on in your head. Your unconscious mind is the one you don t notice. It is working while you are asleep or when you are paying attention to something else. So, what about making decisions? According to Dutch researcher, Ap Dijksterhuis, your conscious mind is best for simple choices, like picking which towel to buy or shampoo to use. But for more complex decisions, like which car to buy or where to go on vacation, your unconscious mind is best. This could be because the conscious mind has a low capacity. It can weigh a few factors very effectively, but when there are too many factors to consider, it can't handle all the relevant information. The human unconscious has a higher capacity to integrate more information, which leads to better choices. So, before you make a decision, you should gather all the relevant information. Then, if it's a simple decision, think it through with your conscious mind. But for a complex decision, "sleep on it" and let your unconscious mind do the work. It sounds strange, but it works. A man I know was agonizing : over which woman to marry. Then, while he was sleeping, his unconscious mind processed the information. When he woke up he knew which woman he wanted to marry. His unconscious mind made the perfect choice. That man is my husband! 97. In this article, the writer s main purpose is to. A) explain the difference between the conscious and unconscious minds. B) amuse readers with a funny story about deciding which woman to marry C) describe different ways to make important decisions D) give advice on the best ways to make different kinds of decisions 98. The writer of this article thinks that choosing a person to marry.. A) causes people to agonize and to feel sleepy B) is an example of a complex decision C) is important, but not as important as people think it is D) is an example of a simple decision 99. Which of the following is NOT given as an example of a decision in this article? A) which towel to buy C) which car to buy B) what shampoo to use D) when to go on a vacation 100. Which of the following situations challenges the opinion this article presents? A) A man makes a bad choice after he dreams about a decision. B) A man chooses a wife easily, without agonizing about the decision. C) A woman thinks about marriage very carefully and then decides not to get married. 9

10 D) A woman agonizes so much over where to go on vacation that she can t sleep. 10
