This NATO Standardization Agreement (STANAG) is promulgated by the Director NATO Standardization Agency under the authority vested in him by the NATO Standardization Organisation Charter. 2. No departure may be made from the agreement without informing the tasking authority in the form of a reservation. Nations may propose changes at any time to the tasking authority where they will be processed in the same manner as the original agreement. 3. Ratifying nations have agreed that national orders, manuals and instructions implementing this STANAG will include a reference to the STANAG number for purposes of identification. RATIFICATION, IMPLEMENTATION AND RESERVATIONS 4. Ratification, implementation and reservation details are available on request or through the NSA websites (internet NATO Secure WAN FEEDBACK 5. The aim of this agreement is to establish a standard method for medical personnel to identify significant medical conditions affecting NATO forces when personnel are unable to communicate and medical records are not immediately available. AGREEMENT 2. Participating nations agree to standardise a method for medical personnel to rapidly identify significant medical conditions, which affect individual members of NATO forces. GENERAL 3. It is important that a means of rapidly identifying significant medical conditions is employed for an afflicted member of NATO Forces who is unable to communicate, in order to ensure that appropriate treatment is given. A tag or disc worn by appropriate individuals, called the Medical Warning Tag, will alert medical personnel to the fact that significant medical condition (s) exist. 1
5 STATEMENT OF DETAILS 4. Members of NATO Forces who are afflicted by a condition that medical authority considers significant, but which is not readily apparent when the individual is unable to communicate, will wear the Medical Warning Tag. Annex A is a list of examples of such conditions. This list is not mandatory and may be modified at national discretion. 5. The information appearing on the Medical Warning Tag will include the wearer s first and last names, personal service number and the condition(s) affecting the wearer (avoid abbreviations). The wearer s nationality may also be shown. Annex B is an illustration of examples of an acceptable Medical Warning Tag. 6. The Medical Warning Tag is to be made of sturdy, heat resistant material. The shape, size and colour of the tag are left to national discretion. It is recommended that the tag be not less than 50mm by 25mm and of a distinctive colour. 7. The Medical Warning Tag is to be worn around the neck in addition to the identity tag or disc. IMPLEMENTATION OF THE AGREEMENT 8. Nations are considered to have implemented this STANAG when the necessary orders/instructions have been issued, directing the forces concerned to put the content of this agreement into effect. 2
6 ANNEX A to STANAG 2347 (Edition 2) EXAMPLES OF SIGNIFICANT MEDICAL CONDITIONS 1 Examples of conditions that warrant issuing the Medical Warning Tag include the following: 1. Allergy to antibiotics such as penicillin. 2. Allergy to drugs such as barbiturates. 3. Sensitivity to biological agents such as horse serum. 4. Sensitivity to immunizing agents when severe. 5. Convulsive disorder e.g. Epilepsy. 6. Diabetes mellitus. 7. Absence of kidney. 8. Use of chronic medication such as anticoagulant or anticonvulsant. Tag must specify exact name of preparation, dose, frequency and method of delivery. 9. Sensitivity to anaesthetics. 1 It is emphasized that this list is not mandatory and that nations are to devise their own lists in accordance with national desires and restrictions. A-1
