2 A child is not a small adult. It sounds obvious, but in reality it s a profound insight - one that guides practically everything we do when we develop solutions for children. For example, you wouldn t give a newborn baby a steak to eat. Just like you wouldn t give a toddler adult medicine, or ask a 13-year-old to drive you to work. Whatever a child s age, we treat them appropriately. This is especially important for children with hearing loss. 10 Hearing in colour When it comes to bringing a smile to a child s face, there s nothing quite like colour. A host of studies proves that kids of all ages are excited and delighted by bright, intense tones. In fact, children seem to prefer these happy hues early on, since a baby s eyesight is better able to recognise bright colours than dimmer, more understated tones. 1 It s with that knowledge in mind that we designed our new family of Phonak Sky Q hearing aids. This new digital standard surpasses all of today s existing analog and digital FM solutions, offering a staggering breakthrough in signal-to-noise ratio while also being easier to use. It is compatible with virtually every hearing aid and cochlear implant, which means kids only need to switch it on to enjoy all its benefits. Roger Clip-On Mic The Roger Clip-on Mic is an easy-touse wireless microphone for one-toone communication in loud noise and over distance. This compact microphone packs industry-leading Roger speech-in-noise performance into a discreet shirt-worn device. It can be used as a standalone microphone or alongside other Roger Clip-On Mics or the Roger Pen to allow communication between multiple speakers. 19 Roger universal receivers These flexible receivers bring Roger speech-in-noise performance to all hearing aids and cochlear implants that have either an audio input or telecoil. Roger X This miniature universal Roger receiver is compatible with virtually every BTE hearing aid, cochlear implant speech processor, and streaming device (through the three-pin Europlug connector). Roger MyLink Roger MyLink is an easy-to-use and affordable body-worn universal Roger receiver that works with any hearing aid or cochlear implant that features a telecoil from Phonak or any other manufacturer. (Not recommended for under 3 year olds). 19

20 Additional wireless accessories Phonak DECT CP1 This cordless phone automatically transmits the telephone conversation to both hearing aids simultaneously, maximizing speech understanding. It allows the child to hold the device just like a regular phone. It also includes a booster mode, which increases the phone s volume - useful for when a child isn t wearing his or her hearing aids. And there s a convenient built-in demo to demonstrate the benefits of direct streaming. Family members without hearing loss can use the cordless phone just like a regular phone. 21 Phonak ComPilot This streaming device offers the ultimate in flexible connectivity, allowing children and teens to enjoy mobile phone calls and multimedia audio streamed directly into their hearing aids, and all in stereo sound quality. Thanks to its built-in Bluetooth, the Phonak ComPilot can be easily connected to a huge range of devices such as mobile phones, smartphones, tablets, MP3 players and more. It also includes a remote control, for changing a hearing aid s program and volume, and VoiceAlerts for easier hearing aid interaction. Phonak TVLink S The Phonak TVLink S works with the ComPilot to turn any Phonak hearing aid into a wireless TV headset. It offers stereo sound quality and is installed in just 60 seconds. 21

22 Phonak Target Junior mode Whether you are fitting a child with his or her first pair of hearing aids or providing technology to an experienced user, it s crucial that these devices are configured to suit the child s age, hearing loss and communication needs. This is why, in 2006, we pioneered a dedicated paediatric mode in our fitting software. This continually updated, evidence-based resource streamlines the process of configuring a child s hearing aids - helping you to fit and verify your Phonak paediatric fitting using the very latest industry guidelines and research findings. 22

23 Fitting software New in Junior mode Refined age ranges Junior mode now spans four age ranges: 0-3, 4-8, 9-12 and years. This finer differentiation for older children allows you to more accurately address their needs. The defaults for these new age groups are based on available evidence and the input of the Phonak Paediatric Advisory Board. Expanded defaults Junior mode s DSL defaults have now been updated to address the usage of Binaural VoiceStream Technology features, such as DuoPhone, StereoZoom, and ZoomControl. It is also now possible to upgrade Junior mode with National Acoustics Laboratory (NAL) paediatric fitting defaults. So whichever fitting philosophy you follow, Junior mode supports it. New Verification Assistant Since younger children cannot always provide useful feedback on what they hear, objective verification is an indispensable way of confirming that their hearing aids are programmed correctly. This four-step software assistant can be run alongside a test box or real ear verification system. It includes handy visual reminders of the transducer being used, the vent size, and a quick view of the RECD values being applied. New Toolbox This helpful new resource - located in the Phonak Target Help menu - includes the very latest paediatric fitting information to bolster your knowledge and ensure fittings go as planned. The Toolbox features current fitting protocols, additional tools such as our frequency-compression protocol, and full details of the rationale behind Junior mode s DSL and NAL fitting defaults. 23

29 Technology in-depth SoundRecover Gives more high-frequency audibility What is it? SoundRecover is a non-linear frequency compression algorithm designed to lower the frequencies of inputs within a frequency range. The primary objective is to restore audibility for high frequency inputs through to 10 khz. SoundRecover compresses the signal above a specified cut-off frequency whereas frequencies below the cut off frequency will be amplified normally. What are the benefits? No matter what a child s degree of hearing loss, developing age-appropriate speech and language is highly dependent upon consistent access to all the sounds of speech. While today s hearing solutions address this challenge well, there are still some limitations. When it comes to a child hearing high-pitched sounds such as /s/, /sh/, /t/ and /f/, SoundRecover (non-linear frequency compression) can help overcome this challenge. SoundRecover gently compresses and shifts these consonants into a range where they become audible, improving a child s access to the full spectrum of sound. Over the past seven years, numerous studies 3 have found that children who use SoundRecover demonstrate substantial improvements in speech recognition and production. This means they not only hear and understand better but can successfully learn and interact with the world around them. Particularly for children, the identification of high-frequency sounds is extremely important for language acquisition and language production. 30 Binaural VoiceStream Technology The heart of Phonak Quest What is it? Binaural VoiceStream Technology is the unique ability to stream simultaneous bi-directional full audio signals in real time using a four-microphone network. Binaural VoiceStream Technology is based on a state-of-the art chipset with a fast processing speed of over 200 million operations per second and 16 million transistors. What are the benefits? Binaural VoiceStream Technology features: StereoZoom The only technology capable of sufficiently narrowing the focus on the voice the listener wants to hear to provide significant SNR improvements of up to 2.5 db in noisy environments. 4 This can help a child to hear a friend sitting opposite, in a bustling cafeteria. DuoPhone Streams the caller s voice from the side where the phone is held to the hearing aid on the other side allowing a child to hear the conversation in both ears. The average benefit is a 3.1 db SNR improvement compared to a monaural telephone program. 5 ZoomControl Ideal for those times when a youngster cannot face the speaker, such as a toddler in a pram or a teenager in a car. Once activated, ZoomControl identifies the source of loudest speech and focuses in that direction. 31 Roger Bridging the understanding gap What is it? Roger is a new adaptive digital wireless transmission standard running on the 2.4 GHz band. It wirelessly transmits the speakers voice directly to the user s hearing aids. It is based on a new proprietary wireless microchip that makes use of intelligent and adaptive algorithms to improve the signal-to-noise ratio to levels never seen before. Roger provides a full audio bandwidth signal up to 7,300 Hz with an ultralow acoustic delay of 17 milliseconds, high internal signal-to-noise ratio and no distortion. Our new Roger Pen and the Roger Clip-On Mic are based on this new standard. Roger allows for flexible and easy creation of networks of wireless microphones and receivers, without having to program them. This enables communication with multiple speakers, each wearing a Roger microphone in high noise and over distance. In quiet, the Roger Pen can zoom in on soft voices reducing the perceived listening distance by up to 75%. What are the benefits? Roger offers the industry s best ever speech-in-noise performance, with proven improvements of up to 35% 8 over Dynamic FM technology and 54% 8 over other FM and digital systems. There are no frequencies to program and manage, and devices are connected with a single click. Roger is also the most compatible system of its kind.
