2 British Sign Language Aim: To introduce learners to description Level 1 Session 3
3 Session Objectives By the end of this session students will be able to: 1. sign signs learnt last week 2. sign about your family using pointing appropriately 3. sign questions using appropriate BSL structure and facial expressions 4. identify what affirmation and negation is by signing signs using them both 5. sign animals, colours, clothes and appearance vocabulary 6. describe someone giving description their clothes and physical features 7. complete learner portfolio stating what you are confident with and where you may need additional support
4 Recap Attracting a Deaf persons attention Remember Deaf people gain all their information through their eyes. 1 Wave 2 Tap 3 Chain tap or wave 4 Finger pointing 5 Stamp floor or table to gain attention via vibration 6 Flashing lights
5 Greeting s: People you know Hi Alright? Haven t seen you in a while
6 Greeting s: unfamiliar people in familiar surroundings e.g. the BSL class or in the Deaf club Formal Hello Good morning/afternoon/evening Informal When signing in an informal environment you will notice that body language and signing style is a lot more relaxed. Where in a formal environment it may look a little slower, clearer and body language a little stiff.
7 Asking for Clarification in sign don t understand sign what? again sign slower signing too fast Please remember when asking a question you must use a questioning face. Within Deaf Culture you must interrupt straight away. Do not wait until someone has finished.

20 Homework Practical In groups of three I would like you to individually sign about the photos you have brought in about your family. Remember to use referencing/pointing and possession. Other group members can ask questions about the person s family if they wish When the person has finished signing about their family they must pass their photo to the person on their right who will then sign it again. Can they get it right?

28 Affirmation and negation within BSL Within BSL we can change the meaning of one sign by shaking our head When we move our head up and down it is called affirmation When we move it from side to side it is called negation
