3 How we hear Ossicles: The ear is made up of 3 parts: Outer Ear Stapes Incus Maleus Temporal bone Semicircular canals Vestibular nerve Middle Ear Cochlear nerve Inner Ear Cochlea Each of these parts has a special function that allow us to hear. 4 Hearing Loss There are two types of hearing loss: 1. Conductive hearing loss: Sound is blocked in the outer or middle ear. Causes: Accumulation of earwax Ear infection or fluid in the middle ear as the result of a cold Damaged eardrum Solution: Most often medically treated with high success Hearing aids very successful if unable to treat medically

5 Hearing Loss 2. Sensorineural hearing loss: This is the most common hearing loss. Inner ear hair cells or hearing nerve is damaged and cannot send complete signals to the brain. Causes Aging Noise Exposure Hereditary Factors Solutions Cannot be corrected with medicine or surgery but is often helped with hearing aids.

6 You are not alone Hearing loss affects about 1 in 6 New Zealanders. This will rise to 1 in 4 New Zealanders by 2050! Over half the population aged between 60 and 70 have a hearing loss. This increases to more than 70% of those over the age of 70 and 80% of those over the age of 80. Based on Statistics New Zealand, in ,000 people were living with a hearing loss, and this will increase to 1.5 million by 2061.

7 Hearing Aid Myths They are large and clumsy Today s hearing aids are discrete and stylish; the smallest are no bigger than a coffee bean and BTE types are becoming smaller and smaller. They whistle Today hearing aids come with feedback cancellation so whistling is reduced. They make your hearing worse YOUR HEARING LOSS ORSE Properly fitted hearing aids do not make your hearing worse. Wearing a hearing aid helps the brain understand speech and sound and prolong speech discrimination.. They are difficult TO USE Most hearing aids have automatic functions and are programmed to suit your needs. Many can also come with user-friendly remote controls.

10 In The Ear (ITE) Invisible-in-canal (IIC) In The Canal (ITC) Completely-in-canal (CIC) In ITE hearing aids, all electronic components are completely contained within a casing that fits directly into the ear. The size of the ITE depends on the degree of your hearing loss and the shape of your ear canals.

11 Behind the ear (BTE) Receiver-in-the-ear (RITE) Receiver-in-canal (RIC) A BTE hearing aid consists of two parts the hearing aid housing (and all its electronic components), which sits behind the ear, and an ear-mould that is formed to fit into the ear. Amplified sound from the hearing aid is directed through a thin, plastic tube between the hearing aid housing and the earmould. This is best if you have a severe hearing loss or very small ear canals.
