1 Syllabus for Undergraduate training program Total no 90 hours (Theory) ORAL MEDICINE SL NO TOPIC TIME Third Year 20 hrs 1 Introduction and scope Definition, Scope & clinical applications, Orientation of the Department & work to be done, Books to be referred. 2 Principles of oral diagnosis- Case history, Consent, Referral and Consultation a) Demographic data, History, General Physical Examination, Head and Neck examination b) Local examination- swelling/ growth, ulcer, mucosal lesions, Concepts of diagnosis c) Brief introduction to Investigations (chair side, radiological, histopathological, microbiological, hematological, biochemical, immunological), Consent, Referral, & Consultation 3 Asepsis Principles, procedures, protocol, sterilization and infection control in clinical and radiology set up. 4 Developmental disorders & regressive alterations of teeth a) Classification, Disorders of lip, palate, jaws, oral mucosa, gingiva, tongue, salivary glands. b) Disorders of the teeth. c) Developmental cysts in oral region and Regressive alteration of teeth
2 5 Dental caries and sequelae a) Definition, classification, clinical evaluation of caries, diagnosis b) Advanced investigation of caries and pulp vitality. Sequelae of caries pulpitis, apical periodontitis, periapical abscess, periapical granuloma, periapical cyst, Osteomyelitis c) Radiographic assessment of dental caries, pulp and periapical diseases. 6 Oral sepsis and its effect on the general system Spread of infection, cellulitis, space infection, foci & focus of infection, intra cranial complications of general infection. 7 Diseases of periodontium Classification, gingivitis, periodontitis clinical and radiographic assessment, ANUG, Briefly on Gingival enlargements, pyogenic granuloma chronic desquamative gingivitis, Periodontium in systemic diseases. Radiographic assessment of periodontal diseases 8 Oral manifestations of metabolic and hormonal disorders and nutritional deficiencies including radiographic interpretations. a) Metabolic disorders- carbohydrate (mucopolysacharridosis, lipoid proteinosis), lipid metabolism (histiocytosis, Gaucher s, Niemen pick disease), protein metabolism( amylodosis, porphyria),mineral metabolism( calcium, phosphorous, in brief iron and other trace elements) b) Avitaminosis c) Hormonal disorders( hyper and hypo pitutarism,thyroidism, parathyroidism, adrenal, diabetes. 9 Bacterial,Viral and Fungal diseases 4 hours a) Bacterial streptococcal, tuberculosis,syphillis, leprosy, actinomycosis, tetanus, cancrum oris b) Viral Herpes simplex, cox sachie, varicella zoster, rubeola, mumps, condyloma acuminatum, infectious mononucleosis, hepatitis B & C.
3 HIV - Introduction,Etiology, classification, clinical features, treatment (HAART therapy) oral health considerations, prevention and post exposure prophylaxis. c) Fungal Candidiasis and deep fungal infections. 10 Blood disorders a) RBC Anemia (classification, clinical manifestations, investigations, in brief management) erythroblastosis fetalis, polycythemia. b) WBC- Leukemia (classification, clinical manifestations, investigations, in brief management),lymphoma and multiple myeloma neutropenia, cyclic neutropenia, agranulocytosis. c) Bleeding and clotting disorders purpura, diseases involving specific blood factors (Haemophilia, Von Willebrand disease), DIC. FINAL YEAR 43 hrs 11 Pharmacotherapeutics,indications, contraindications, adverse reactions of the following 1h our NSAID S, Antibiotics, Antivirals, Anti fungals, Corticosteroids, Immunosupressive agents, sialogogues and anti sialogogues, Anti histamines, chemotherapeutic agents Prescription writing Drug interaction of drugs taken in systemic diseases 12 Differential diagnosis of cervical lymphadenopathy Brief introduction to lymphatic system, classification and examination of head and neck lymph nodes, lymphadenitis, lymphadenopathy( classification,investigations,diagnosis). 13 Ulcerative and Vesiculo bullous lesions 4 hours a) Various definitions, classification, acute multiple lesions, recurring oral ulcers, Chronic multiple lesions, Single ulcers,
4 Management protocols for the various conditions. 14 Red and white lesions a) Introduction, classification, normal variations /developmental, reactive/ inflammatory lesions. b) Genodermatosis, infective, miscellaneous ( hairy tongue, lichenoid reactions, benign migratory glossitis) 15 Potentially malignant lesions and conditions a) Definition and concept of potentially malignant lesions and conditions, premalignant lesions 16 Oral cancer a) Introduction, epidemiology, etiopathogenesis, clinical features and staging. b) Investigation, diagnosis and protocol for management. c) Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy and their complications. 17 Allergy and immunological diseases a) Brief introduction to immunity,classification of immunological disease, primary and secondary immunodeficiencies. b) Auto immune diseases- in detail lupus erythematosis, scleroderma, in brief rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune disorders c) Allergy and hypersensitivity reactions. 18 Diseases of Nerves and Muscles (Neuromuscular disorders) Neuropraxia, neurotmnesis, facial nerve paralysis including Bell s palsy, Myasthenia gravis, Multiple sclerosis, trismus, myositis ossificans, MPDS, syndromes- Heetford s syndrome, Melkerson Rosenthal syndrome, Ramsay Hunt Syndrome. 19 Orofacial pain Definition, types of pain, classification of orofacial pain, examination, assessment and general management of pain. a) Diagnosis and management of neuralgias- trigeminal neuralgia, glossopharangeal neuralgia, post herpetic neuralgia,

Recognition, Assessment, management and prevention of Medical emergencies anaphylaxis, syncope, cardiac,respiratory, diabetes, shock 27 Dermatological lesions Introduction, classification in detail ectodermal dysplasia, psoriasis, Ehler Danlos syndrome, hyperkeratosis palmar plantar keratosis. 28 Diseases of maxillary sinus Introduction, classification, in brief sinus pathologies; radiographic investigation and diagnosis. 29 Forensic dentistry Introduction, definition, age and sex determination, dental identification procedures- lip print, rugae, bite marks, forensic radiology. Procedures for post-mortem dental examination; maintaining Dental records and their use in dental practice and post-mortem identification; jurisprudence and ethics. 30 Psychosomatic disorder. Introduction, classification, burning mouth syndrome, glossopyrosis, cancerophobia, taste abnormality, MPDS, Atypical facial pain, Anorexia nervosa and bulimia.
7 31 Trauma to the maxillofacial region clinical and Radiologic assesment 32 Geriatric Medicine- age related changes in oral health- common oral disorders in elderly population- dental disorders, periodontal, salivary glands, infectious diseases, smell and taste dysfunction, swallowing disorders, edentulousness Management and prevention of conditions in older population Evidence based Dentistry RADIOLOGY THIRD YEAR 11 hrs 1 Radiation physics including properties of X rays a) Composition of matter, nature of radiation, properties of x-ray,xray machine. b) Production of x-rays, factors controlling, interactions of x-ray with matter, dosimetry. 2 X- ray films, Grids, Intensifying screen. 3 Image characteristics and projection geometry a) Principles of shadow casting, image sharpness, resolution, magnification. b) Image characteristics, definition of an ideal radiograph, radiographic density, contrast, speed, film latitude, radiographic noise. 4 Intra oral technique including object localization a) Introduction, indications, limitations, paralleling and bisecting angle technique, film-holding devices. b) Bite wing, occlusal, object localization. 5 Processing of X-ray film and quality assurance Latent image formation, composition ofdeveloper and fixer, steps in processing, manual and automatic processing, dark room equipment, quality assurance.
