1 ORTHOdontics PG II UPDATE ON CURRENT ISSUES INCLUDES LECTURES ON: CURVE OF SPEE TOOTH TRANSPOSITION DISTRACTION OSTEOGENESIS INCISOR INTRUSION FACULTY: Samar Bou Assi, DDS. Goals: This series of lectures should enable the resident to: 1. Update his knowledge on current issues in orthodontics. 2. Engage constructive discussions in controversial orthodontic subjects. 3. Prepare assignments and presentations on specific topics. Objectives: At the end of these lectures, the resident should be proficient in: 1. Gauging the clinical situation and approach it from the point of view he sees appropriate. 2. Establish the proper treatment plan with alternative treatments that he might switch to in case of complications. COURSE DURATION AND SCOPE: This course is scheduled between March and July for the second year residents. It is given every Monday at a 1.5-hour session between 8:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. It includes lectures on the latest update on controversial orthodontic issues.

2 POLICY ON EXAMINATIONS: One examination is given for this course in July, usually part of the final examination. During these lectures, any number of assignments may be given. Their cumulative weight in proportion to the final grade may not exceed 50%. CURVE OF SPEE COURSE OUTLINE 1. WHAT IS THE CURVE OF SPEE? 2. HOW DOES THE OCCLUSAL CURVE DEVELOP? 3. WHY SHOULD WE FLATTEN THE OCCLUSAL CURVE? 4. HOW MUCH SPACE DOES A CURVE OF SPEE REQUIRE TO BE FLATTENED? 5. HOW CAN WE LEVEL THE CURVE OF SPEE? 6. HOW STABLE IS THE LEVELING OF THE CURVE OF SPEE? 1.
