7 Taking decontamination to another level. A nurse simply scans the barcode which updates the patient records. Simplicity Over recent years, maintaining a safe surgery environment for patients and staff has become challenging. An effective decontamination process, along with the ability to trace which instruments have been reprocessed, is very important. Tracking at every stage Simplifying the process of tracking instruments through the decontamination cycle was something I d been looking into. We d been using a manual system for instrument reprocessing: handwriting labels on pouches, logging the time, date and which machine the pouches went through. Not time-consuming for staff and ultimately costly for the practice, I wanted to minimise any room for error. We talked to Paul Liano, Principal Dentist at Tangmere Dental Centre about the traceability of dental instruments. Efficiency Integration The MELAG MELAtrace seemed a good option. The MELAtrace software is intuitive to use, integrates with practice management software packages. Tamper-proof PDF As every instrument set finishes its decontamination cycle, the MELAtrace software automatically generates a tamper-proof PDF report of the processes they have been through and indicates if the cycle has been successful or not. A barcode carrying this information is generated which is printed onto a label and attached to the clean pouches. This barcode can then be scanned and stored in the patients computerised notes. The easy-to-use scanner A handheld barcode scanner is used to read the barcode which shows the details of the exact cycle the instruments have been through, along with the expiry dates. All data is safely stored and eliminates the need to keep handwritten records.
