Poor diet, smoking and alcohol misuse are well recognised as risk factors for many general health conditions. These can also a ect, in particular, the oral health of individuals and it is therefore vital that the dental teams take appropriate and complete medical and social histories for each patient and support them making healthier choices. By doing so, the clinical teams are not only contributing to the improvement of the patient s general health but also to their oral health. This informative document contains not only important information and guidance regarding the above issues, but also advice on other forms of caries prevention such as the use of fluoride, brushing of teeth and the application of fissure sealants. The guidance on the provision of fissure sealants, for the prevention of caries in children aged from 7 years and young adults, advises to fissure seal permanent molars with resin sealant on patients giving concern to their dentist, such as, those with obvious current active caries, those with orthodontic appliances, dry mouth, other predisposing factors and those with special needs.
