The following selection options are relevant for provisional restorations in the order definition: [1] Provisional crown Select the indication Provisional restoration if you want to generate a crown orientated to the morphology of an existing tooth. It is also possible to use a tooth from the tooth library. [2] Anatomic pontic Select the indication Anatomic pontic, if you want to generate a bridge pontic, to replace a previously extracted tooth. The shape of the pontic will be loaded from the tooth library. [3] Provisional pontic Select the indication Provisional Pontic, if a tooth is to be replaced, which will be extracted at a later date. The morphology of the pontic is orientated to the anatomy of the existing tooth, but it is also possible in this case to use a tooth from the tooth library. 2

3 It is important to understand the difference between the types of pontic, as this results in a different workflow in the CAD. Below are two examples to illustrate the difference: Example of a Provisional Pontic (left) Select Provisional restoration (Pontic) for an existing tooth, which will be extracted at a later stage: Bridge spanning tooth 32 to 41 Example of an Anatomical Pontic (below, tooth already missing) Select the indication Anatomical Pontic with a tooth, which has already been extracted. MARKING THE MARGIN OF THE PROVISIONAL RESTORATION The first step when designing an eggshell provisional restoration is the definition of the provisional restoration margin for all teeth, which are selected as a provisional crown or pontic. Click on the scan data where the preparation margin should be placed later. Click again to add other points. Existing points can still be moved using Drag & Drop. Deleting points: click and hold the left mouse key on a point and then press the right mouse key. Do not drag the preparation margin high in the interdental region! The margin can be marked through the scan data, by placing a control point on the buccal and the next on the lingual. Set scan data to transparent to obtain a better view of the preparation margin. RIGHT After pressing the apply button, the points can be moved as before; however, this changes the shape of the tooth. Press Apply again to re-adapt the shape to the scan data. Try to ensure that the margin is not below that of the adjacent tooth otherwise the provisional restoration will be too large to fit between the adjacent teeth. The preparation margins of adjacent teeth should not overlap. It is best to view the preparation margins from below to check overlapping. WRONG 4

5 3. MANUAL ADJUSTMENT OF TOOTH MARGIN DETECTION (SEGMENTATION) The software automatically detects which area of scan data belongs to the tooth that has been marked for the preparation margin. If detection does not produce the desired result (e. g. missing sections of tooth, or the tooth contains sections that actually belong to the adjacent tooth), you can then manually influence the marked areas under the heading Adjustment. Areas that belong to the respective tooth should be marked yellow. To mark missing areas of the tooth left click on the required area and mark it yellow. If sections of the adjacent teeth and / or gingiva have been marked yellow accidentally, you can colour them grey again by keeping the Shift key pressed and clicking the left mouse button. If the result is satisfactory, press Continue. 4. FREEFORMING If working with heavily damaged teeth, it may first be practical to contour the anatomy of the tooth roughly to the required shape; the interior aspect of the provisional restoration will be generated from this later. Edit the tooth using the tools described under Freeforming. Provisional pontics can be moved by clicking on the base of the pontics and dragging (the area marked with a star in the screenshot). 5

6 5. INTERIOR ASPECT OF THE PROVISIONAL RESTORATION The interior aspect of the provisional restoration is designed in the next step (the virtual preparation). Set the full anatomy to semi-transparent to get a better view of the interior aspect. Different parameters, which can influence the design of the inside, can be adapted. [A] Width of the shoulder [B] Angle of the shoulder [C] Angle of the tooth preparation 5.1 Setting the path of insertion To change the path of insertion, drag the yellow sphere above the path of insertion indicator arrow [4]. If the checkbox [1] is activated, the change affects all teeth and if this box is not ticked the path of insertion can be set individually for each tooth. Once you have finished setting the parameters, click [2] to apply the changes. 6

7 5.2 Select the next step The shape of the provisional restoration is derived from the original tooth shape of the scan data by default. In case of severely damaged teeth it may be preferable to use a library tooth instead. This mode can be selected at [3]. _ Select Work without tooth library (default setting) to use the original shape from the scan data. _ Select Use tooth library to load a library tooth. The original shape will then be displayed as a study model. When selection is complete, click Continue. The Wizard will guide through the remaining steps, which are familiar from conventional crown and bridge designing. 7
