6 Resiliency Resilience (noun) or Resiliency (noun) Able to recover quickly from misfortune; able to return to original form after being bent, compressed, or stretched out of shape. A human ability to recover quickly from disruptive change, or misfortune without being overwhelmed or acting in dysfunctional or harmful ways. 7 Resilience Factors Sense of Safety Ability to be calm Self-efficacy and community efficacy Connectedness Hope The Latina/o Paradox The combination of low socioeconomic status and good health outcomes observed in Latinas/os compared to U.S.-born non- Latino white subjects. However, advantages do not appear on other conditions such as diabetes, old age disability, occupational injuries. 8 The Immigrant Paradox The immigrant paradox refers to the same combination observed in immigrants, principally Mexican immigrants, compared to U.S. born Latina/o subjects. The immigrant paradox was only consistently found for Mexican immigrants who reported lower rates of depression, anxiety and substance abuse and dependence compared to U.S.-born Mexican subjects 20.4% of U.S.-born Latina/o subjects reporting lifetime prevalence compared to 7% of Mexican immigrants.
