The Correlation Between Depression Symptoms and Length of Disease in Scleroderma Patients Eva Rajan
Introduction characterized by the thickening of the connective tissue and internal organs 2 types of Scleroderma: Limited Systemic Sclerosis Patients can live with limited Systemic Sclerosis patients on average live 3-5 years after diagnosis
Review of Literature Societal impact is great high rates of disability and shortened life expectancy (Medsger 1997) Burn victims and scleroderma: body image dissatisfaction (Benrud-Larson 2002) Scleroderma patients with more skin thickening had lower appearance self esteem linked to more psychological distress. (Melcarne et al., 1999)
Review of Literature Relationship between body image Psychological distress as well as adaptation to illness and depression Researchers get their information based on: interactions with medical staff their general beliefs about health and illness information from friends and family internet
Review of Literature Heinberg (2005) researchers found that if they had a chance to die they would take it. Depression is an aspect that is often overlooked.
Hypothesis/Research Objectives Research Objectives: To see if there is an association between length of disease and depression in scleroderma patients. Hypothesis: Length of disease is likely to affect depression among scleroderma patients
Subjects - Demographics 186 scleroderma patients subscribed to the weekly e-letter. 13 men 173 women From the United States, Australia, Great Britain, and Canada. All subjects had scleroderma. All subjects were over the age of 18 years.
Subject Recruitment/Selection 9,000 patients receive the weekly e-letter. Main story for one week Side story for 3 weeks Link gave basic information History of certain medical conditions can affect the answers. General Demographics Questionnaire Taken prior to the actual survey to screen out patients.
Procedure Survey on Scleroderma Foundation e-letter Self-Consent Anonymous Submission by &ft=1&f=1027,1030,1066
Instruments Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES- D) 20 questions Self-Administered Measures depressive symptoms Sleep disturbance Loss of appetite Feelings of worthlessness Guilt Takes 5 minutes (Radloff, 1977; Comstock & Helsing, 1976; Weissman, Shlomoskas, Pottenger, Prusoff)
Sample Questions From CES-D Survey I did not feel like eating; my appetite was poor. I felt depressed. I thought my life had been a failure. I felt fearful. People were unfriendly. I felt that people dislike me.
Results Sample: % females 7.5% males. Total mean score or the overall average on the CES-D scale was 18.9 (12.7).
Conclusions Women get older, less depressed Low scores on CES-D grew older lower levels of depression. Males felt they were just as good as other people more often than females Males had more occasions of restless sleep than females
