1 Proficiencies Each of the items outlined below is a technique/term that we commonly use in the New Trier athletic training room. As student athletic training aides, you will be given the opportunity to learn and practice these skills. Each student will work through the skills at their own pace but will only be allowed to practice them on our athletes once three acceptable practice applications and one final test have been completed. At no time will any students be allowed to perform any of these skills without supervision and permission from a certified athletic trainer. Rehabilitation Skin Conditions Medical Terminology

5 Skin Conditions Objective: be able to identify and know how to treat different skin conditions specific to athletes. Common Terms: Macule not raised, 1cm or less Patch not raised, greater than 1 cm Papule raised, 1 cm or less All Identifications Completed: Plaque flat elevation, greater than 1 cm Nodule rounded elevation, greater than 1 cm Tumor large nodule Vesicle fluid filled, 1 cm or less Bulla fluid filled, greater than 1 cm Pustule elevated, pus filled Wheal firm edematous plaque, transient Crust dried fluid, ex: scab Comedones plugged sebaceous follicles Scale excess keratin Excoriation erosion from scratching Erosion partial thickness loss Ulcer erosion into dermis Fissure crack like break into dermis Ringworm What it is: Raised circular patches at edges, central portion flat Cause: Skin to skin contact (not from mat surface) Tx: Physician, Oral/topical treatment for 7 days Impetigo What it is: Bacterial infection, honey colored, moist lesions Cause: Spread on mat surface Tx: Physician, Rx topical antibiotic Molluscum Contagiosum Wrestler s Warts What it is: Pox virus Cause: Contact w/ infected Contagous: YES Tx: Physician, Scrape off (by physician)

6 Herpes Gladiatorum What it is: Cold sores Cause: Skin to skin contact (not from mat surface), takes 3 8 days to show after being infected Tx: Physician, antiviral Rx Corns What it is: Hard conical papule w/ translucent center Cause: too much pressure on area Tx: modify foot wear, soften lesion, remove Plantar Warts What it is: thickened plantar papules w/ black dots, benign epithelial tumors Cause: HPV (human papillomavirus), moist walking surfaces Tx: Physician, Rx, Surgery Warts, Verruca Vulgaris What it is: thickened papules Cause: HPV (human papillomavirus) Tx: salicylic acid patch Black Heel What it is: traumatic micro hemorrhages, small asymptomatic black macules Cause: trauma induced darkening Tx: none needed Blisters What it is: vesicles and bullae Cause: excessive friction Tx: prevention, drainage Scabies What it is: pruritic papules, excoriations Cause: mite Sarcopetes scabiei Tx: Physician, get a scraping, topical Rx Tinea Versicolor What it is: patches of discolored skin w/ sharp borders and fine scales, dark reddish tan Cause: fungus Pityrosporum ovale, type of yeast Tx: Physician, antifungal Rx (same as ringworm)

7 Eczema What it is: rough and inflamed patches of skin w/ itching and bleeding blisters Cause: Unknown Tx: keep hands dry, lotion, topical steroids Acne Vulgaris What it is: Football acne ; scaly red skin, comedones, papules, pustules, nodules, and possibly scarring Cause: blockages in follicles Tx: benzoyl peroxide; Rx Cellulitis What it is: infection of dermis and subcutaneous tissue Cause: bacteria Tx: rest, elevation, Physician if severe Folliculitis What it is: hair follicle inflammation Cause: staph infection Tx: wash w/ soap, Physician, topical Rx Furuncles What it is: more severe hair follicle abscess Cause: staph infection Tx: warm compresses Methicillin Resistant Staph Aureus (MRSA) What it is: staph infection strains resistant to Rx Cause: spread directly person to person Causes: skin infections Tx: Physician Contact Dermatitis What it is: allergic reaction from chemicals Cause: plants Tx: Benadryl, topical steroids Sunburn What it is: mild to intense superficial reddening of the skin Cause: UV radiation Tx: cool compresses, topical steroids or lotions
