The juice cleanse, the 10-day kale smoothie detox, the paleo diet, the gluten-free diet, low sugar, no sugar, lowcarb, no-carb, no-fat diets. When it comes to leading a healthy and nutritious lifestyle, it can extremely difficult to know exactly what to eat. Contributing to this is the fact that we are incessantly bombarded in our everyday lives with conflicting information. Whether this is through discussions with friends and family, advertising of the aforementioned diets, countless apps on our mobile phones relating to nutrition or surfing the Internet. In this fast-paced world, no wonder why it is becoming harder and harder to separate fact from fiction. This is where the importance of a dietitian comes into play. The truth is, that while some information out there may indeed be true, a lot of it is misconstrued or misleading and a lot of people are left feeling more confused. Majority of healthy claims have little to no scientific evidence backing up their health claims. Not only do dietitians work under evidence based practice, they also understand the importance of individualised patient care. We understand that no two people are the same. This is resultant of numerous reasons ranging from genetics, to environmental influences; the way we eat even has the ability to change the way we metabolise and process food. Our Dietitian here at Ocean Wave Medical, Casey Cowie, will help you to develop healthy eating and lifestyle habits that are tailored to YOUR individual lifestyle and needs. Christmas and New Year s is just around the corner, so there is no better time to make your healthy new year goals and resolutions, let s start 2017 off with a bang. To book your Dietitian appointment with Casey at Ocean Wave Medical, please phone our head office on For further information visit our website or follow us on Facebook. Regards the Team from Sunshine Coast Dietetics
4 PODIATRY at Ocean Wave Medical with David Morgan From David Morgan, Podiatrist DIABETES & ITS EFFECT ON OUR FEET Foot problem is one of the leading complications of diabetes and a common cause for hospitalisation if not managed or treated early. Serious complications, such as foot ulcers and amputations, can however be prevented through regular check-ups and careful self-management. If diabetes is poorly controlled for a long period of time, nerve damage and reduced blood supply to the feet can occur. With nerve damage, basic injuries to the foot like cuts, blisters, corns and callous can go unnoticed due to the loss of sensation. If the circulation is poor then these injuries can take longer to heal, and a simple cut or abrasion can result in a severe infection particularly when blood glucose levels remain high. To prevent problems: - Maintain acceptable blood glucose level control. - Protect your feet from injury. - Check the feet daily for any cracks in the skin or bleeding. - Wash your feet daily with mild soap and warm water, and dry them carefully (especially between the toes!). - Cut and file nails carefully but not too short. Avoid trimming the nails yourself if you have poor circulation or poor sensation. - Prevent dry skin conditions with a daily moisturiser to the feet and legs. Remember, no cream between the toes as there s enough moisture already! - Avoid barefoot walking. - Wear well-fitting shoes if you have a corn on top of your toes then your shoes are too tight. - Avoid commercial corn cure and medicated corn pads they do a lot more harm than good. - Exercise regularly and don t smoke! A diabetes foot assessment by a podiatrist is recommended to establish your foot health status, and to determine whether you need to return annually or be seen more frequently.
