2 What is an AED? - an automated device that provides lifesaving shock to the heart to restore its normal rhythm - voice and text prompts guide the rescuer on how to place the pads and when to shock - capable of analyzing heart rhythm and automatically administering shocks - essentially causes a reboot of the heart AHA, 2012.

6 Why are AEDs important? - approximately 300,000 Americans suffer from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) a year - survival rates are dismal, ~6.4% - AEDs can restart the heart and provide audible CPR instructions - shock + CPR can result in >50% survival rates - AEDs can be easily and effectively used by untrained laypersons - ~1 million AEDs in the US in public places AHA, 2012.

7 Where are the AEDs? No one knows where all of the AEDs are because: Registration recommendations vary by state Industry sells to distributors, organizations, etc. No geo-tracking tags are available at present Challenging to track over time Inevitably people die everyday and a device is nearby.

13 Specific Aims Aim 1: Develop a database of AEDs in Pennsylvania using a social media based contest coupled with traditional data collection approaches. Aim 2: Validate AED locations. 31 Preliminary Findings - using an Internet search, we were able to locate several AEDs across several counties - this method may be used in collaboration with other methods (e.g. door-to-door, crowdsourcing) to locate AEDs - further work is needed to refine search strategy

32 Limitations - information about AEDs varies across websites and is generally limited - this study only represents one approach for locating AEDs - information on AED locations is fluid - businesses may have AEDs, but not list them on their website - businesses listing AEDs on their website may not be valid or current
