Job: Red Dog Crane Operator Description: Operates the Red Dog Crane Equipment Assessed: Red Dog Crane ESSETIAL DUTIES 1. Operating the Red Dog Crane A) Sitting B) Handling Controls C) Operating Foot Pedals 2. Ascending and Descending the Red Dog Crane on Essential Duties: Keep inside of the gantry cab clean Clean gantry cab windows Shift Schedule: Two operators are assigned to each gantry per 8hr shift. Each operator works 4hrs and it is up to the operators to determine whether that is 2hrs on / 2hrs off or 4hrs on /4 hrs off. There are no coffee breaks with this job. Staffing: Two operators are assigned to each gantry every shift but they work alone in the crane. DESCRIPTIO OF ESSETIAL DUTIES 1. OPERATIG THE RED DOG CRAE Frequency Operates the Red Dog Crane for 4 hrs out of an 8-hour shift. Equipment Red Dog Crane at Kinder Morgan Task Description Operator uses the crane to unload bulk vessels. This requires setting up the crane parameters and then monitoring and adjusting the parameters to ensure that the crane is unloading at an optimal rate. There are many controls (hand, feet, and finger) that are used to operate the crane and clamshell buckets. In order to access the operator cab, the operator must take the elevator or climb 14 flights of stairs. There are automatic and manual modes. Manual operation is performed when setting up the parameters, when performing equipment lifts (excavator, bulldozer, front end loader) into the hold of the shift. ErgoRisk 2008 Page 1 of 7
In automatic mode, the operator sets up the parameters (~15 minutes) and then monitors and resets the parameters on an ongoing basis (1/15 minutes). The offloading process is constantly observed. A deadman pedal is constantly depressed by the right foot throughout the operation of the crane. A left foot pedal is depressed to engage the talk function of the radio when communicating with the supervisor or other workers. A SITTIG Equipment Red Dog Crane Seat Duration up to 4 hours Frequency sustained Force n/a Task Overview Frequent and sustained neck and back flexion (up to 45 deg) when hunching forwards to look down through the gantry floor windows to see the clamshell. Frequent rotation of the neck to the left or right when moving sideways. The operator is seated for the duration of the operating task. Frequent sustained bending of the torso when trying to view the bucket directly below the cab. o option to support the spine and view the work below. Frequent neck flexion and extension when manually setting up the crane parameters (~15 minutes). Looking down and then looking at parameter controls. atural seated posture is typically a rounded upper back and forward head posture. Operator may bend forward so much that hips may come off of the seat (maximal flexion from the hips/back will not provide sufficient line of sight to the clamshell. Whole-body vibration when gantry is in operation. Significant side to side jarring when trollying over transitions and when changing the direction eck extension and rotation when looking overhead (overhead and to the right) to view a monitor with the conveyor route on it. Viewed as needed to ensure material is flowing to the right location. B HADLIG COTROLS Equipment Joysticks, switches, button controls Duration up to 4 hours Frequency Constant when operating Force minimal Task Overview The Red Dog Crane is equipped with a system that allows the operator to set parameters (limits) on the movement of the clamshell. When offloading a vessel, the operator sets up the parameters at the start of the shift/work period. This process requires constant manipulation of joysticks, radial dials, and buttons. This normally takes 15 minutes. Once complete, the crane is put in automatic mode and it will travel constantly from the ship s hold (lower clamshell, fill clamshell, lift clamshell) to the grizzly (dump clamshell contents). In auto mode, the operator resets the parameters (allows clamshell to go deeper, further to each side) to ensure that the clamshell is grabbing material. Resetting of the parameters normally occurs 1/15-20 minutes. When in automatic mode, the operator handles the directional controls less frequently. However, it was noted that the crane may need to be operated in manual mode for the full shift. This requires constant operation of the hand controls and parameter adjustments for 4 hours. There are joysticks on both sides of the operator and it was estimated that these are used for 30 minutes of the shift (auto mode) to 4 hours (manual mode). When setting up, the operator keeps their hands on the joysticks while leaning forward to view the clamshell. This results in shoulder extension and awkward postures of the wrist. Small wrist movements in all directions may be required to manipulate the different controls. There are significant dexterity requirements to make fine adjustments to the crane parameters. The arms are unsupported at all times. ErgoRisk 2008 Page 2 of 7
C OPERATIG FOOT PEDAL Equipment Left-radio; Right-dead man pedal Duration 4 hours Frequency Constant Force minimal Task Overview There is a footrest for the feet. There is a switch by the toes of the left footrest that allows the operator to talk handsfree (hands will be on joysticks). There is a dead man s switch by the right section of the footrest that must be depressed at all times. The weight of the foot keeps this control depressed. FUCTIOAL DEMADS with MSI POTETIAL Operating the Red Dog Crane eck Manual mode and setting up Constant neck flexion, extension and rotation place stress on the tissues of the cervical spine. Rounded upper back and forward head posture from sitting hunched can put stress on the neck and upper back. Reaching backward with the arms when looking down to the clamshell increases stress on the muscles of the neck and upper back. When the cab and clamshell change directions, the cab sways abruptly causing significant body sway. This can stress the muscles and soft tissues of the neck if the operator is not prepared or if the neck is in a non-neutral position. Back Manual mode and setting up Operator my bend so far forward that hips will come out of the seat in order to see between feet to the clamshell Lumbar spine may round when leaning forward to look down at ship hold and clamshell. This places a lot of stress on the discs and other spinal tissues. Increased C-curve forward leaning postures place increased mechanical stress on the back. Static use of back muscles from sitting for extended periods can increase fatigue. When the cab and clamshell change directions, the cab sways abruptly causing significant body sway. This can stress the muscles and soft tissues of the back if the operator is not prepared. Shoulder Shoulder extension and abduction occurs when the operator leans forward and looks down at the clamshell. Reaching overhead to press buttons or controls occurs occasionally for seconds at a time. The arms are not supported when operating the crane. Sideways and backwards reaching with either unsupported arm to access controls can stress the shoulder. ErgoRisk 2008 Page 3 of 7
Elbow/Wrist on-neutral wrist postures may be used to operate the controls when reaching back or to the side of the body. Hips/Knees/Ankles The right foot is held in one position on the dead man s pedal when the crane is in operation. This can lead to fatigue in the muscles of the lower leg. STRATEGIES TO MIIMIZE MSI Operating the Red Dog Crane eck Stretch the neck muscles often to allow tissue recovery resulting from awkward postures. Try tucking the chin to place the neck in proper alignment with the spinal column and then rotate the head to one side or the other. Hold the stretch for 20 seconds. Keep neck in neutral spinal alignment by avoiding forward head postures. As much as possible turn body rather than twisting neck when viewing. Back Try to maintain the 3 curves of the spine when bending forward. Bend from the hips rather than the low back. Focus on sitting tall. Where possible, use a third point of contact for stability if one hand does not need to be on the controls. As much as possible, avoid sitting for extended periods of time to minimize static use of back muscles. Take the opportunity to stretch or walk during scheduled breaks to restore blood flow to the spinal tissues. Reverse forward leaning postures by arching the back, squeezing the shoulder blades together and sticking the chest out. Shoulders Perform shoulder stretches during breaks. Elbow/Wrist Maintain neutral wrist posture when operating hand controls or levers; move the whole arm from the shoulder joint to operate the control rather than just small wrist movements. Take hands off of controls when not in use. Use automatic mode as much as possible. Hips/Knees/Ankle: Change foot position on the dead man s pedal throughout the shift in order to File photos change the stresses on the soft tissues of the ankle. Perform hip, leg and ankle stretches on breaks to maintain range of motion and promote recovery. Change body position from sitting to semi-sitting or standing if hand controls are not in use (15s-30s). This will promote bloodflow and minimize the development of fatigue or discomfort. Hip, hamstring and quadriceps stretches help to maintain hip mobility. This is important to allow the spine to maintain the lumbar curve. ErgoRisk 2008 Page 4 of 7
2. ASCEDIG AD DESCEDIG THE CRAE Frequency Two to four times per shift depending on whether the operators are working 4hrs on/4 off or working 2hrs on/ 2 hrs off. Equipment Red Dog Crane Task Description Operators may use a small elevator or climb 14 flights of stairs to access the level of the cab. To access the catwalk there are a combination of stairs, walkways and barriers (metal handrail outside the cab that needs to be raise to access the cab) that need to be navigated. To access the elevator, the operator climbs a flight of stairs. Once inside the elevator they close the door and push a button to raise or lower the elevator. To get from the elevator to the crane cab operators walk along a catwalk and then open the door to the crane. The door pulls open when entering from the outside and pushes open when exiting from inside. ASCEDIG & DESCEDIG THE GATRY Equipment one Duration <5 minutes Frequency 2-4 times/shift Force Minimal FUCTIOAL DEMADS WITH MSI POTETIAL Ascending & Descending the Red Dog Crane eck Significant neck flexion may occur as the operator looks up or down to ensure footing. Shoulder Operator will hold onto the handrail at or above shoulder height. Slipping or pulling the body upward can place significant stress on the shoulder muscles. Hip Climbing the stairs is physically demanding and may result in fatigue of the leg muscles. Knee When descending stairs, surfaces may be slippery. Fatigue and slippery surfaces could result in slips, trips or falls. STRATEGIES TO MIIMIZE MSI Ascending & Descending the Red Dog Crane eck Avoid sustained neck flexion when climbing up/down the stairs. Check footing then return to looking in front when climbing up/down. Shoulder Hold onto the handrails between waist and shoulder height. ErgoRisk 2008 Page 5 of 7
Use legs to climb stairs rather than pulling with the arms (going up) or leaning on the arms (going down). Maintain three points of contact when descending stairs. Hip/Knee/Ankle Take breaks as needed going up the stairs. Control speed of descent to minimize the likelihood of a slip, trip or fall. Use the elevator to eliminate stresses on the legs. Use hand and foot supports where possible. Avoid jumping to minimize risk of strains and sprains to the ankle joints. 3. EVIROMETAL COSIDERATIOS Exposure to Elements The operator is inside the cab for the duration of the time he is operating the crane. The operator is exposed to the elements when ascending/descending the stairs to the elevator (or to the ground) and when walking along the catwalks. Uneven Surfaces Walking over railways, uneven pavement, grated metal stairs and catwalks and transitions to between the catwalk and the cab. Vibration The operator is exposed to whole body vibration throughout operation of the gantry with additional jolts when the crane changes direction. ErgoRisk 2008 Page 6 of 7
