2 What is Ambulatory Esophageal ph Monitoring? This is a way to tell if acid is coming up from the stomach. Acid reflux can cause many symptoms like heartburn, chest pain and difficulty swallowing. It can also cause cough, hoarseness and make asthma worse. How is this test done? The instrument consists of a battery-powered recorder attached to a small flexible catheter. The catheter is passed through your nose into your esophagus. This catheter monitors the ph of any secretions in your esophagus. The catheter will be taped in place and left in overnigh You will take the catheter and recorder home with you. The catheter remains attached to a small recording device at all times. You will be given a case to carry this recorder with you. You must return to the lab between 7:45 and 8:00 am the next morning for removal of the catheter. If you have an appointment with the doctor that ordered this test right after the catheter is taken out, please tell the therapis 2 3
3 Follow these instructions... lease eat breakfast but do not take anything by mouth three hours before your appointment time. You may eat normally once the catheter in put in. For the duration of the study we request that you keep a diary (which we provide). This diary includes meal times, times when you lie down and get up from the lying position, and when symptoms occur. The therapist putting in the catheter will talk to you about i Handle the equipment carefully and do not let it come in contact with water. Do not have a bath or shower during the time of the tes Certain medications affect this test and your doctor may ask you to stop them prior to the tes IF YOU ARE DIRECTED BY YOUR DOCTOR to stop your medications for the test, follow the guidelines in this bookle Cancellation/Rebooking Appointments If you wish to change or cancel your appointment please call the ulmonary Function Lab at least one week in advance. This much notice is required to ensure other patients can be scheduled in your place. If you do not provide the ulmonary Function Lab with adequate notice that you will not be keeping your appointment, you will not receive any priority when rebooking.
