2 Your Clinic Consultation: Your Overnight Sleep Study Appointment: Report to the Admitting Department on the main floor of UBC Hospital at p.m. on the night of. Your study will be for night(s). You will/will not be having an day time test (MSLT) on (8:30 a.m. 5:30 p.m.) As part of your clinical evaluation, you have been asked to have an overnight sleep study or polysomnogram. Depending on the nature of your complaints, you will have to spend one or more nights in the hospital. If you suffer from excessive daytime sleepiness, you may also need to complete a daytime test (Multiple Sleep Latency Test MSLT) which will take place the day after your last overnight stay in the sleep laboratory. This pamphlet is to remind you of your appointment and to give you some information about the test and the admission procedures. To prevent delays and to minimize the time you have to spend in the laboratory, each of the six patients who are studied each night have been given a specific time to report to the admitting office. If you are late for your appointment, you will have to wait until all the remaining sleep laboratory patients have been admitted. Please be punctual. After formal admission to the hospital, you will be taken to the Sleep Laboratory located on Ward 2C. The technologist, who will be in attendance all night and supervising the recording equipment, will help you settle in for your stay. Your Follow-up Clinic Appointment: 1 2

3 You will need to bring the following items for your stay: toiletries including shampoo sleeping attire (loose fitting only, no tights, _ no tight clothes) any medications you require to take during your stay (please bring them in their prescription bottles) any diaries or records you have been asked to keep reading material your own pillow, if you like, although the hospital does supply pillows credit card will be needed to pay for parking What NOT to bring: cash in excess of $20.00 large amount of personal clothing or luggage cellular phones (they interfere with electrical _ systems in the hospital) any item of value (e.g. jewelry) any plug-in electrical appliance Please Note: There are no lock-up facilities available in the evening. The hospital will not be responsible for lost, stolen and damaged valuables. If you bring your car you may park in the Visitors Parkade for a fee. If you are being dropped off, there is a drop-off zone (10 minute limit) in the front of the hospital (see map on back cover). Please report directly to the Admitting Department on the Main Floor. When the admission procedures are completed, you will be taken to the Sleep Laboratory on Ward 2C. The technologist will meet you in your room and he/she will explain all the procedures that will be completed for your study. You will be asked some questions about your current health and your sleep. You are encouraged to ask questions or express any concerns that you may have. The procedure is non-invasive, meaning there will be no needles. It takes approximately one hour to prepare you for the study. The technologist will be available in the next room and you will be supervised at all times. The study will take place overnight and finish between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m. For Respiratory patients, preliminary results will be discussed with you by a doctor. General patients are free to leave once the technologist has completed the study. You can buy breakfast in the hospital cafeteria. Patients staying for a daytime test will be served breakfast and lunch from the hospital kitchen. If you require a second night s evaluation the technologist will inform you of when you should come in. After the first night, you do not need to return to the admitting department; come straight to the laboratory. The MSLT (multiple sleep latency test) consists of four or five scheduled twenty-minute naps and runs from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., depending on the results during the day. The earliest you will be discharged is 4:00 p.m. while the latest is 5:30 p.m. 3 4

4 GENERAL Sleep Disorders Patients: It is very important that you do not nap (except if you have narcolepsy), drink alcohol or take recreational drugs one week prior to, and during, this test. Do not consume caffeine (coffee, tea, cocoa, chocolate) after noon the day of your test. If your doctor wishes your study to be completed on your current medications, he/she will tell you this. Napping, using alcohol, recreational drugs or caffeine affects the test and can limit its usefulness. CANCELLATION It is very important that you notify us at least 48 hours prior to the study if you are unable to make this appointment or if there has been any change in your medical condition. Because the laboratory is heavily booked, it can take up to three to four months to reschedule The Sleep Disorders Program at UBC Hospital was established to provide a special expertise in the investigation, diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders. Donations made to the clinic are used to aid research and purchase additional equipment. All donations are tax deductible and appropriate receipts are issued.
