3 HELPFUL ADVICE AFTER YOUR SURGERY Unless otherwise indicated by your ophthalmologist, you should continue taking all your medications (including drops for the treatment of glaucoma, as needed). If you experience a headache after surgery, take two acetaminophen (Tylenol) tablets every six hours. DROPS, OINTMENTS & ANTIBIOTICS Follow the recommendations of the nursing staff. Note that ointments can blur your vision. ARTIFICIAL TEARS Apply artificial tears as often as you feel the need. EMERGENCY Contact us IMMEDIATELY, if you experience any of the following: Redness that intensifies. Induration that increases and/or persists (swelling that hardens). Persistent intense pain in the eye or at the surgical site (beyond 36 hours post-surgery) that cannot be relieved with medication. Loss and/or reduction of vision after your surgery. Purulent discharge (i.e. yellowish/greenish). Repetitive shooting pain. Inability to open the eye that was operated Heavy bleeding.
4 POSTOPERATIVE FOLLOW-UP Unless otherwise indicated by your ophthalmologist, you must return to the Institut de l œil des Laurentides for your postoperative follow-up on: Date : Time : Most stitches used during surgery are absorbable. If this is the case, they will dissolve on their own in 7 to 10 days. However if the stitches are non-absorbable, you will be given an appointment at the Institut de l œil des Laurentides to have them removed. Do not wear makeup for 10 days or as recommended by the nurse. Do not wear your contact lenses for 10 days. Avoid exposure to the sun. Remove the bandage covering your eyes two hours after surgery or. Apply hot compresses for 15 minutes, 3 times a day for 2 weeks. Do not wet your face for 48 hours. After this period, you can wash your face with clear water. Once at home, apply ice, or a small bag of frozen peas, for 15 minutes. Continue doing this three times a day for three days (do not place the ice or bag directly on the skin). To prevent edema (swelling), raise your head when sleeping (use 2 3 pillows) (48 hours post-surgery). Tell your ophthalmologist if you are taking blood thinners (Aspirin, Asaphen, Novasen, Entrophen, Plavix, Coumadin, Pradaxa or other drugs). It is very important to follow the ophthalmologist s recommendations. Resume taking anticoagulants, including ASA, 24 hours from now or as recommended by your doctor:. Keep the tape over your eyes (eyelid/or wound) for five days. If it comes loose, do not cut it off. If some of the stitches come loose, do not remove them yourself. Avoid places that are dusty and/or where there is a risk of injuring your eyes for 10 days. If you require a letter to justify your absence from work, one can be issued to you.
