1 Vasectomy Procedure Information UROLOGY
2 Vasectomy Pre-Procedure The vasectomy procedure is performed in the doctor s office or in the outpatient setting under local anesthesia. There are some actions you will need to take to prepare you for your procedure. To reduce the risk of bleeding, avoid taking all blood thinners ( Aspirin, Coumadin and NSAIDS) Please review the list of medications in this packet that should be avoided 10 days prior to the procedure. If your have been prescribed Aspirin, Coumadin, or Plavix, check with your primary care physician to discuss how long you can be off these medications before the procedure. The day of the procedure you will need to shave the entire scrotum and the base of the penis to remove all hair. Stretch the scrotal skin while shaving to get a close shave and reduce nicks. Using a razor with shaving cream works best. Please remember to bring a scrotal support (jock strap, biking shorts) with you on the day of the procedure. 2 October 30, Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc. For internal use only.
3 Post-Procedure Day 1-2: To reduce swelling place an ice pack or a package of frozen peas on a thin towel or fabric and place against the scrotum. This will promote the healing process. Sitting and lying down will be most comfortable but you may walk around as tolerated. You should avoid strenuous activities. Day 3-4: Sit / lie down and continue using cooling measures (ice pack / frozen peas). Day 5: You may resume normal activity as you like, but continue to wear your scrotal support until the testicles feel completely normal. Pain: Narcotics are rarely needed and only prescribed in special cases. Tylenol every 4-6 hours as needed works well for almost everyone. Sexual Activity: You may resume sexual activity in 1-2 weeks. No ejaculations for 5 days after procedure to help prevent increased swelling. Remember to continue to use birth control until a negative semen check has been confirmed. Stitches: All stitches will dissolve by themselves. This process takes about 2-4 weeks. You may see some irritation around the stitches at 7-10 days. This is normal. You can wash the area with soap and water. Keep area clean and dry. Some bruising is expected. Things to watch out for: Fever or chills, progressive redness around the incisions, worsening pain or swelling, or persistent discharge at surgical site, if you experience any of these symptoms please contact Urology. 3 October 30, Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc. For internal use only.
4 Post Procedure Semen Check The specimen container should be labeled with: patient name, medical record number and date / time of the ejaculation. The entire seminal fluid sample is to be collected by masturbation into container which will be supplied by the Urology department. This should be done 8 weeks after the procedure and 20 ejaculations later. Samples transferred from a condom are NOT acceptable because some of the sample may stay on the condom resulting in loss of volume and a change in the sperm concentration. This can cause an inaccurate result. The sample should be protected from extreme temperature (too hot or too cold) and should be delivered within 2 hours of ejaculation. Please contact the Kaiser lab for specific drop off times. 4 October 30, Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc. For internal use only.
