2 Taking the Remedies Firstly, it s important to note that an acute is something that comes on suddenly and is usually short lived. It is a one-off illness as opposed to a chronic complaint that is low lying, constantly there in the background with flare-ups of the illness from time to time. An example of an acute is the onset of flu with fever while a chronic complaint is more likely to be eczema or asthma. If you have a chronic complaint then this is always best to be treated by a qualified homeopath as we look beyond the complaint. The first thing to consider when treating an acute is to look at the similar collection of symptoms in the sick person, to the group of symptoms that the original substance could cause in a healthy person. It is very important when treating acute illnesses to be observant to the symptoms, for example, - The time of the day or what caused the acute to come on - Sensation is it stinging, cramping or itching? - If it s a fever does the person feel hot and dry or is there perspiration? - Is the person irritable, exhausted, no energy, tearful, angry? - Are they thirsty? - The location of the ailment. Taking the Remedy for an acute symptom/illness Take one small tablet under the tongue every hour until you start to feel better. As soon as there is an improvement STOP taking the remedy. 1. Arnica (the mountain daisy) The No.1 remedy for bruising but it can do so much more and is something I always have with me. I never travel without it. Not only does it help with bruising but it is also the top remedy to be used in shock. So sometimes we see the people after an accident and they might have really hurt themselves but they say no I m fine and they might have broken their arm. They are clearly in shock. 3 Injury Concussion Before an operation Before a dentist appointment for a tooth extraction. Jetlag 2. Aconite (Monkshood) Everything about this remedy is sudden and violent. It is great remedy for sudden onset usually from becoming chilled from draughts, cold winds or even a fright. This remedy is best taken at the beginning of an ailment if you wait too long the opportunity will have passed and a different remedy will be required. Restless Pains usually described as burning or tingling Headaches (like a band around the head) and high temperatures A good remedy for a hoarse, croup, dry painful cough. Chills/Shivers. 3. Apis Mel This is a great remedy for bee and insect stings. If you ve been stung by a bee you may get a reaction, with swelling, redness and puffiness and possibly a burning heat. Insect stings Fevers Cystitis Swollen eyes, lips, tongue, ankles Tonsillitis All ailments are better for cool air or cold compresses.

4 Pains are burning, stinging and visible symptoms are shiny, red, puffy and swollen On the emotional level if we think about the action of a bee, busy flitting from flower to flower, collecting pollen and furiously fanning their wings we see a picture of great restlessness. 4. Belladonna (Deadly Nightshade) The berries of this tall plant are poisonous hence it s name. Although it s said that Italian ladies of fashion found a way of using this cosmetically during the Renaissance period as it enlarged their pupils and the plant became known as beautiful lady belladonna. This is a good fever and headache remedy or for any pain that is throbbing. - Being out in the sun for too long - Fever with high temperature - Restlessness - Burning hot face - Little thirst but might crave lemonade - Sudden onset of fever worse at 3pm/3am - Dilated pupils - Pains throb, throbbing head a good headache remedy sometimes people describe the headache as a pain like a lot of little hammers Like Aconite, the best time to take this remedy is at early onset. 5. Chamomilla (Member of the daisy family). Affects the nervous system causing extreme irritability and oversensitivity to pain. So this comes into its own with babies. Excellent remedy for teething babies who are bad tempered and irritable, throwing toys out of their prams. Might sometimes see one red cheek or both cheeks red

5 Colic in babies, especially when the babies stool smell like rotten eggs and look slimy and green 6. Gelsemium (yellow jasmine of North America). This is a brilliant flu remedy especially when the muscles are feeling heavy and aching. Shivering Stiffness Symptoms are slow developing Fever, perspiration without thirst This is also a good remedy for anticipation with a fear of ordeals, such as public speaking, interviews or meeting important people. 7. Hypericum (St John s Wort) Relieves pain in areas that are injured and nerve rich, e.g. falling on the coccyx, cut fingers, cut lips, banging fingers in a car door. Brilliant remedy for preventing infection in cuts and bites Pains are usually described as shooting Can get this in a cream form from Boots, but I would usually use Hyper Cal which incorporates Hypericum with another remedy called Calendular 8. Nux Vomica (poison nut)

6 This remedy is great for party goers. Remedy for over-indulgence Hangover cure Disturbances of digestion Desire to vomit but unable to do so. Good heartburn remedy 9. Rhus Tux (poison ivy) First aid remedy for sprains and strains Worse when first moving, i.e. first thing in the morning Stiffness in joints Complaints are better for warmth and massage Worse for cold and damp and over exertion 10. Ruta Ruta used to be grown in monasteries as one of its uses was to relieve the monks eyes from the strain of writing illuminated manuscripts. First aid remedy for injuries to the tendons, especially in ankles and wrists Affinity with the tendons, cartilages and the periosteum (membrane surrounding the bone).
