1 May is almost over, it has been a very busy month around here, but the garden is now in and I can devote some time to finally getting out the monthly newsletter. I am continuing on with the Emergency Preparedness series and this month is focused on homeopathy, which I consider the easiest, most compact, and in the long run least expensive part of the first aid kit. To purchase a complete kit can be costly, but there are several things to consider. Only small amounts are used at a time, each bottle has multiple doses. Even though most homeopathic remedies have expiration dates, they stay viable long past those dates - I don't throw them out - unless the bottle is empty. The bottles are fairly small, light weight, easy to store, easy to carry. Recipe of the month Berry Soup from Living on Live Food by Alissa Cohen ½ c almonds 2 ½ cups orange juice 1 ½ c water 2 Tbsp lemon juice 1 Tbsp honey Dash cinnamon Dash nutmeg 3 c blueberries, raspberries, strawberries or blackberries or combination. 1. Blend first 7 ingredients in blender 2. Pour blended soup over berries and chill before serving. Know your Ingredients: Water, corn syrup, hydrogenated coconut and palm kernel oils, sugar, sodium caseinate, polysorbate 50 and sorbitan mono-stearate (for uniform dispersion of oil), natural and artificial flavors, xanthan gum and guar gum (thickeners), artificial color.

2 Homeopathics are great addition to first-aid kits. They are compact, easy to carry and cover a multitude of imbalances. We always carry the Washington Homeopathics 100 kit with us wherever we go. It has developed into some interesting conversations with TSA in the airports, but well worth the hassle when Montazuma hits in Mexico or a rash breaks out while cruising the Carribean. Homeopathic remedies come in dilutions from 1X to 10ML. What does that mean and why is it important? The more a substance is diluted, the greater impact it has on the body. An 1X dilution means it has been diluted one time, A 30C dilution is thirty times one hundred and so on. For most first aid kits the 6X or 30C dilutions are the most common. A homeopathic remedy kit is the ideal first aid kit to have for a wide range of problems that arise from everyday living while at home or traveling. Having multiple homeopathic remedies close at hand makes dealing with minor injuries like the small bruises when a young child falls or bumps into something to the more seasonal issues of colds, allergies and flu much easier to deal with. Typically when deciding on homeopathic remedies there are many different types of symptoms to look at. When using homeopathic remedies as first aid, it is much easier to decide which remedy to take. When purchasing a homeopathic remedy kit, it is important to look for one that meets your needs. If you are going to be using it at home with young children you want to have remedies that are appropriate for childhood situations. 4 Allium Cepa congestion, coughing. Think of cutting up an onion. If your eyes are watery, the nose runs or gets stuffy, these are the typical symptoms that Allium can help with. Any type of congestive situation. Apis Melifica Insect bites or all kinds. Anytime there is an itching bump on the skin and an insect bite is suspected this is a great remedy to have close at hand. I personally have a bee sting kit I carry everywhere which includes Apis melifica. Arnica Montana bumps, bruises, shock and trauma. This is a must include for all first aid kits. Removing the shock from the body allows the body to recover more rapidly. It doesn't matter if the shock is physical or emotional Arnica comes to the rescue. Arsenica Album diarrhea. Whether the cause is bad food, an intestinal bug or drinking the water in Mexico, Arsenica can help bring the bowels back into balance. Always remember when losing water it needs to be replaced. Cantharis - Bloating blisters, burning pain, irritable, swelling, unconsciousness, urinary. This is the first remedy that comes to mind with burning during urination. Nux Vomica vomiting, flu. This is just one of the remedies which can help with flu symptoms, but it is always the one I think of first. If you just look at the name you will figure out why. Rhus Tox Poison Ivy or rashes of any type. Rhus Tox does much more, but it is the first remedy that comes to mind when anyone has been exposed to poison ivy. Other remedies you might want to include are: Aconite - Chilly, colds, croupy cough, eye pain, fear, flu, palpitations, shock, vertigo. Belledonna - Boils, confusion, constriction, earache, fever, frantic, throbbing headache, pulsating, redness. Calendula Officinalis- Abscess, burns, glands, infection, injuries, pus, wounds.

5 Chamomilla - Colic, earache, frantic, irritable, sensitive, sleeplessness, teething. Cocculus Indicus- Car sick, menstrual, numbness, spasms, vertigo Ignatia Amara- Ailments from grief. Hypericum Perforatum - Burns, head injury, nerve pain, neuritis, puncture, stings, wounds, trauma. Ledum Palustre- Bruises, chills, hives, puncture, stings, wounds Phosphorus - Anxiety, bleeding, bronchitis, bruises, burns, confusion, fear, hoarse, vertigo, vomiting from anesthesia Podphyllum Peltatum- Diarrhea Ruta -Graveolens arthritic, eye pain, fractures, soreness, sprains, strains, tendonitis Urtica Urens - Allergies, burns, hives, itching Last but not least consider including a flower essence remedy to help with the emotional trauma. Even the smallest injury can be emotionally upsetting. Having a bottle of Distress Remedy or Bach Flower Rescue Remedy is a must have for any first aid or disaster kit. Supplements are in danger Senator Dick Durbin is once again attempting to get rid of supplements and it may happen today unless you act NOW! There is an FDA bill before the Senate that is relative uncontroversial, but it's considered a "must-pass" bill. Senator Durbin is planning to offer a last=minute amendment to that bill, slipping it in under the radar and piggy-backing it on a bill that will go through without debate. This amendment will destroy DSHEA - the law that protects supplements from unnecessary government intrusion and regulation.

6 The amendment says, among other things, that supplement companies must register their products with the FDA within 30 days, or they will be considered "misbranded" and companies will be subject to outrageous financial penalties, possibly even jail time. To avoid this, many companies will simply remove their supplements from the shelves until they are able to comply with the new requirements. That's right Thirty-days after this law goes into effect, many supplements will disappear. There are several other dirty tricks this amendment will do. It is imperative you contact your senators IMMEDIATELY and tell them to vote NO on the Durbin dietary supplement amendment. It is urgent that you take action NOW!
