Ayurvedic Medical College & Research Institute, Gondia, INDIA Abstract Ayurveda is the everlasting supreme science of medicine because it deals with all aspect of life particularly of human being since antiquity. Everyone who wants to live a long and healthy life is expected to follow the rules of conduct which are given in Dinacharya upakrama in Ayurveda. Abhyanga is one among the Ayurvedic theories explained in Dinacharya. Regular practice of Abhyanga will prevent many diseases of Vata. Vayu is predominant in tactile sense organ, located in twak, Taila Abhyanga has specially advised on Shira, Karna and Pada.The feet being karmendriya, one can walk and move up to desired place.hence the feet and soles get affected with dryness and heat at first, aggravates Vata, which impairs the healthy condition of Pada and produces Padadari. Tila Talia is the best among all the tailas,as it is twachya and is best Vatashamak. So Padabhyanga with Tila taila disintegrates pathology of Padadari which is Vata in its origin. It exerts soothing action on the soles and promotes the defense mechanism in the Pada and maintains a healthy condition of Pada. Keywords: Padabhynga, Padadari, Dinacharya upakrama, Til taila. 2 INTRODUCTION Padadari come under kshudra roga. Due to less severity of nidana, rupa and chikitsa, some of the vyadhis are called Kshudra roga [1]. The word `Padadari` indicates `daran` in the pada talapradesha [2]. It can becorrelated to cracked feet. Cracked feet are a common cosmetic problem and a nuisance to most people. Charaka has not mentioned Padadari disease separately but the reference of padasputanata symptom can be found in different context e.g. while explaining Padabhyanga guna, Charaka told that it relieves padasputanta. Because of excessive walking, barefoot walking, there is padagata vataprakopa, especially with ruksha guna locally (at foot region), rukshata and vedana. This condition is called as Padadari [3]. In Padadari vata get aggravated and reaches to padagata twak, where already Rasavaha, Raktavaha, Mamsavaha Srotovaigunya is present and produces Rukshata, Daran and Ruja. These Laxanas are due to increased rukshaguna of vata. So the line of treatment is controlling Vata, overwhelming dryness and healing the cracks, which is possible by cleaning, drying, and applying snehadravya(lubricants) to the affected area. Foot massage is highly praised in Ayurveda. Application of oil on the feet followed by massage is popularly known as Padabhyanga. Foot massage really preserves man, from diseases and troubles and brings peace, prosperity and good luck [4]. Abhyanga is one among the Ayurvedic theories explained in Dinacharya. Regular practice of Abhyanga will prevent many diseases of vata [5]. A beneficial description of effects of foot massage is written in Vagbhata. According to him, there are 4 important nerves in the sole of the feet which are connected to the head. Because of heat, friction and excessive pressure on the feet, these nerves get affected as a result of which eyesight of a person gets reduced. But after giving massage to the soles, a person never suffers from eye diseases. Also one must note important basic principle that feet (Karmendriya) and eye (Dnyanendriya) both are related with element of fire.hence although they are far apart from each other, they are interconnected with each other [6]. Padabhyanga in Padadari [7] By massaging of taila in Padadpradesha, kharatva, (coarseness) stabhata (stiffness), rukshata (Dryness) shrama (fatigue) and supti (numbness of feet) are alleviated in no time. Further delicacies, strength, sthairya in feet, dristiprasad (clarity of vision) are attained and Vata is pacified. By massage of taila in feet, there is no occurrence of Gradhrsi, Padasputanata and sankocha of sira and snayu [8]. 3 (removes fatigue) andsuptihar (removes numbness) and softens the skin of the feet (sole) [9]. Padabhyanga imparts stability, nidrakar, shramher, it is chakshushya, padasupti, Shrama, sthambha, sankocha, and sputanata is reduced. One who applies taila regularly to his feet, never gets any diseases. Diseases run away from him as snakes (run away) from eagles [10]. It is shukrasthambakar, and gives protection to the eyes. It reduces kapha and meda, shramahar, vatanashak, sukhakar, skin becomes beautiful and sharirapratyanga becomes drudha.padabhyanga is `Mana-sukhakar `and `Mana-anukulkar` because it has calming effect on mana and acts as a natural tranquilizer. It is comforting, reassuring, soothing and so it makes one happy. Italso increased foot strength, ability to stand continuously for long periods. One can avoid hardness, stiffness, roughness, tiredness and insensibility to touch. It is beneficial for treating cracks in the sole and varicose veins and for improvement in eyesight. After proper foot massage, person gets better sleep. It is also work through reflexology, the basis of this technique is that reflex zones mapped out on the feet and hands are related to different areas of the body. These organs can be stimulated for health and therapeutic purposes through the massage and manipulations from the areas of the hands and feet [11]. Hence proper foot massage at respective site on the foot with specific oils prevents and cures diseases. According to the science, various organs like heart, lungs, kidney, brain, intestines all can be stimulated by feet massage. DISCUSSION An alternative route, transdermal drug administration, enable to drug contained within an adhesive skin patch to pass across the epidermis and into the blood vessels of the dermis [12]. The drug is released at a controlled rate over one to several days. Because the major barrier to penetration of most drugs is the stratum corneum, transdermal absorption is most rapid in regions of the skin where this layer is thin, such as the scrotum, face and scalp. Proper massage with oil removes dirt from the skin cleans millions of pores on the skin. With massage the blood circulation gets increased and this helps the exfoliation of superficial dead skin cells, tones the skin and encourages its rejuvenation process. Massage also helps the skin to maintain its elasticity and strength. Increase in blood circulation helps to accelerate the lymphatic system, which absorbs and eliminates many waste products. Massage increases the blood circulation and improves the nutrition. It has been shown by various scientific experiments that more blood flows through the tissues during and after the friction or rubbing. The waste products like lactic acid and congestion of blood in the exhausted muscles gets removed, hence they become refreshed [13]. Available online: October Issue 133

4 Mode of action of Tila Taila Abhyanga in Padadari Tila is considered as to be best in all available tailas for Abhyanga as it nourishes all the seven dhatus of the body.tila taila has Snigdha, Mrudu,Picchil and Ropana Gunas.Hence it suppress the vata.at the same time it does not aggravate the kapha.it is act as twachya [14]. 1. Tila taila is Sukshma Teekshna, Vyavayi, Vikasi i.e. it possess the property of penetration into the tissues and spreading through the body and cures the cracked soles. So it is helpful in Abhyanga of the twak. 2. It is Ushna Veeryatmaka and having shulaghna property. So Tilataila Padabhyanga relieves Padashula. 3. In Prakupita Vata, Chala, Sukshma, Laghu Gunas are increased, while tilataila having opposite guna of vata.so it pacifies vata easily. 4. Usnhna veerya of tilataila helps to reduce Vedana, Sthambha and Sankocha. 5. Yogavahi property with the help of Samyoga and Samskara, it helps in Tridoshashamaka and Shulahara. According to Ayurveda Vayu is predominant in Sparshnendriya which is located in twak.due to aggravation of vata in Twak, Rukshata, Kharata which are the gunas of vataare increased. Twak directly comes into contact with the external atmosphere. Twak of the sole is thick as compared to another part of the body. Because it is an organ of support and locomotion. Also it is thick for protection.twak of sole is thick so 15 minutes approximately required for Padabhyanga Main function of twak is absorption of medicinal application, removal of waste material through perspiration. So Tilataila is absorbed by twak and pacifies the aggravated vata.twacha which shows the location of Bhrajak Pitta [15], readily absorbs ingredient of taila i.e. Snigdha, Guru, Mrudu, Drava, Sara, Sukshma. These are the qualities opposite to properties of vata dosha. Hence Padabhyanga makes the twak smooth and make it shine. Regular rubbing makes it strong. CONCLUSION Padabhyanga with Tila taila brought softness in the soles; it has given bala and sthairya to the feet, alleviating Padasputana, rukshata and shrama.tila taila has opposite gunas that of vata. Hence it pacified the vata and reduced vedana.padadari is existing as a distressing order and recurrence of disease is common. So regular practice of `Tila taila Padabhyanga `acts as a preventive and curative treatment in `Padadari`. Available online: October Issue 134
